I will answer this question on two levels; 1) the professional aspect and the 2) social-cultural adjustment aspect.

我从两个层面来回答这个问题：1、专业层面，2、社会文化调整层面。

As an American, I have been teaching English and other subjects in China since 2010. Things have changed quite a bit since I started, but some things continue pretty much the same. Now, prospective teachers must be certified to teach English and this was not the case in the past.

作为一个美国人，我从2010年开始就在中国教英语和其他科目。自开始以来事情发生了很大改变，但是某些事情依然是老样子。现在，当老师要有资格证，而以前不用。



Yes, occasionally the pay is delayed depending on the school you work for, this is especially the case if pay-day falls on a holiday or weekend. This is where SAFEA comes in handy, if it becomes a pattern or it appears that something shady is going on, just the threat of consulting SAFEA about the situation is usually enough to get things resolved.

有的学校有时候会迟发薪水，尤其是发薪日恰逢假期或者周末的话。这时候外国专家局就很有帮助了，如果这成为惯例或者故意拖欠薪水，那么你可以对他们说要把这个事情反映给外国专家局，这样威胁一下他们一般都会支付薪水了。

Now for the social-cultural aspect. Disclaimer, I love China and the Chinese people, but I will do my best to be objective.

再来说社会文化层面。免责声明，我爱中国和中国人，但是我会尽量保持客观。



But as Jeff said, there may be a breakdown, the phenomena of culture-shock and culture fatigue are real. If you can’t handle stinky squat toilets, bad drivers (by western standards), the lack of Bojangle’s and other fast food restaurant with the exception of the fab-five, frequent power and water outages (depending where you end up), then be prepared to be home sick. For me, it’s all part of a wonderful adventure and I love it.
