In 1899, the french artist Jean-Marc Côté thought that people in 2000 would be riding seahorses and fishing seagulls from the sky (Link). Now unless I am missing out, this is NOT what happened. But it does go to show one fact:
Predictions are fictions.
No one predicted the rise of President Trump, the Brexit nor the victory of the Cubs. And that was just in 2016.

I don't understand why people ask this question as China and India are two different countries and they are not in a race to chase up each other. It's like positive and negative to the world. If they are smart one can be the manufacturer and the other can be the servicer.

What they said is true to a great degree(except that they aren't almighty) if you look around :
How many good leaders did we have since independence?
How effectively have we eliminated corruption?
What are our world class accomplishments as a nation?
Are we self sufficient?
Are we among the top 3 economies?
How many world class institutions do we have?
What are our breakthroughs in defence and space technologies?
Are we relevant in international politics? Heck, are we atlest heard?
How much of influence can you wield in the UN?
How strong is your currency?
What's the percentage of increase in exports over the past decade?
How many world class companies do your have?
What's the percentage of increase in HDI over the past few years?
And I can go on…

英国人的预测在很大程度上没有错（只不过现在的英国已经不再强大），比如：
自独立以来我们有多少优秀的领袖？我们在打击腐败上多么有效？我们取得了哪些世界级的成就？我们自给自足吗？我们的经济世界前三吗？我们有多少世界级的院校？我们在国防和空间技术上有什么突破？我们在国际政治上拥有多大影响力？在联合国拥有多少影响力？印度货币有很强吗？过去十年出口增加了多少？拥有多少世界级的企业？过去几年人类发展指数增加了多少？等等。

Well Naga you are right. But India is changing it’s just that congress did nothing all these years and we cannot just expect Modi to just snap his fingers and wow done! India has progressed a lot and it will. Some part of it starts with us. Where are you in progressing India? What have you done? Ask yourself. It starts with you.

Most definitely possible. Japan went from rubbles to being a economical powerhouse in less than 50 years. Why China itself grew from a poor nation to being a super power in 50 years. India has the ingredients to be the next success story. Will it be? Only time can tell.
