So, I got a new job, which pays well, and live in Brazil. I own a PS4, a PS3, a Vita, a Wii, a broken 3DS and a Sega Saturn (not to mention the laptop and phone). I was willing to buy a Switch to start 2019 playing Smash, but goddamn is it expensive here. A brand new Switch with no games costs more than a PS4 Pro, ffs. The New 3DS, however, is half the price. I'm almost inclined to pick the New 3DS instead, just to play stuff I may have missed (SMT4 Apocalypse and Fire Emblem), but I still feel robbed.
Here in Brazil, some stuff is cheap, like Steam games, but buying a new console tends to be very heavy on the wallet. And with the Switch, even the games are expensive (double the price of a PS4 game). Maybe that's why there's so much piracy here.
For people who live outside of US and Canada, how much of an issue it is to buy new consoles, games or even PC parts? I always heard about people in Australia complaining, but I wanted to know more about other countries in Asia and Europe, mostly.

The biggest issue with game pricing in Europe (I'm in Finland) is that the RRP is really high for some reason at 70 for console games and 60 for PC games. But nobody is actually charging that, you easily find console games for 55-60 at retail and PC games (a bit uncommon now) for 45-50. This makes the prices at PSN and Xbox Live absolutely ridiculous and it's never worth buying digital games here.
The overpricing on digital PC games allows key sellers to do their thing even if there was a region lock in place. Not sure how many people buy retail PC games, but I did get a pre-order version of Doom 2016 on its 2nd day of release that came with a cacodemon stress toy. It cost me 48, the game would have been 60 on Steam.
PSN has very good sale events which is the main way to buy digital games. You can see it in Sony's monthly published charts where the top 20 has a lot of games that had a discount in that time period. I think game companies are a bit dumb training consumers to never buy full price games, but that's their problem - I'm just saving my money.

Here in Spain, (And this applies to the Eurozone in general) it's alright. It's not nearly as cheap as in the US but it's manageable. (Americans would have a heart attack at games being 70$, but thanks to 1=1$ according to the games industry that's what we have here, in fact the MSRP at launch of the Switch here was 329, which is equivalent to 376$)
IIRC, A thing sometimes people don't bring up when comparing price differences is that they usually evade the taxes. US taxes are different ith each county so they have MSRP, which is base price without taxes, so depending on the can can be very well above and usually kinda pars with the european prices. Most of the online shops usually dispatch from tax havens.

Afaik, sales taxes in the US are generally much lower than in the EU, so while the comparison is not completely accurate, there is a degree of truth to it. I just calculated it with the Switch, with no sales tax it would still be 310 USD, and I doubt any US county has a 21% sales tax.

Digital console games are rather expensive here in mainland Europe; most AAA games are 70 (more than $80) on PSN and Xbox Live. Retail games are usually sold for 10 less, which really makes no sense.
PC games are cheaper: between 49.99 and 59.99 for brand new AAA games on Steam, uPlay, Origin and B.net. And these games can be found even cheaper in 3rd party keystores.
The only exception is the Windows Store, where Play Anywhere games are 69.99 because of parity with consoles. Microsoft also doesn't allow key reselling.

Buying games at launch in Europe is fine as long as you don't buy digital or at Gamestop equivalents.
Most online stores and big general stores tend to sell way below MSRP nowadays on day one. You can get most new games for around 50 (MSRP is 69.99 which is a big nope).

Yep. My engineer friends are pulling in 40k US a year when the same jobs would net them 100k+ in the right US cities. I make a foreigner's salary at an international school which is high compared to local salaries, but low compared to what I'd be paid at even some public schools in the West, or even at some of the American schools in Taipei where foreigners can make over $6000 US a month (!).
It's enough to live comfortably if you live cheaply, though. I've got a cheap apartment ($12000 NT/month for a 3-bedroom in southern Taiwan), eat local food ($600 NT a week or less), and take public transportation ($40 NT for a round-trip on the train) so I don't do too badly. If I had to live on a local salary I'd be scraping by, however.
I am thinking about moving to the US, to be honest with you.

In South Africa things are a bit of a mixed bag.
On the digital front Steam, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all run "in-currency" stores. However, it's all over the place in terms of "standards". Quick example of MK11 and DMC5 :
At retail, $60 releases generally retail for about R1000 over here which is closer to $70. Keep in mind that the minimum wage is $1.58 per hour (or R20).
I'm fortunate that my education was "okay" enough (I didn't go to university) to allow me to have a good enough career that can support "expensive" hobbies such as videogames.

Gaming here means a lot of sacrifices.
This is really it. I barely earn US$ 300 a month, so I can't justify buying anything gaming-related since 2017. Bilis and food eat it up, and by the 15th the month already ended.
Games with "ultimate editions" normally go up to 100+ dollars, also. On Steam.
And because Rio is a touristic destination, housing and living costs are fucking high.

Chilean here, the cost of the consoles now are better than launch, for example a Nintendo switch its now around 375usd, at launch was over 500usd, you can find a ps4 slim around 290usd, for a launch AAA game, you pay around 65 bucks, all of this with taxes included, so isnt that bad, but the minimun income here its also low, around 414usd, so its like in most of the world, a luxury.

In Poland we get 1$ = 1 euro and 1 euro is around 4,5 PLN for us.
Average salary is around 2,5-3K outside the good jobs in the biggest cities (then idk how much people earn, like 10k maybe?). But me and majority of my friends earn around 2-2,5 K PLN per month.
So an AAA game costs 230-240 PLN. For some people one video game is 1/8 of their salary. And there are people who earn less than 2K.

Of course.
Create a new US account. When it asked me for address, I just googled a random hotel in Dover Delaware. Delaware has no sales tax (I'm sure there are other states like that, this is the one I used). Of course, use a different e-mail than your original, that's simple.
In order to add funds, I go to pcgamesupply.com, they are very reliable, accept Paypal and send the code in minutes.
Since all accounts on one console share the games, you can use your original account to play if you care about trophies and such. I use my US account for everything, it's my main one with PS+ on it.
Depending on the exchange rate, new games come out to about 50, and frequent sales drop the prices down quite a bit.
I also have a Canadian account back from the days when they had same dollar amounts for prices, that was even better, but they changed it a few years ago (increased Canadian prices).
