TIL Tea is said to have been discovered in 2737 BC by a Chinese emperor when some tea leaves accidentally blew into a pot of boiling water.

1:whoisfourthwall: The chinese have a lot of legends like this. There was also this legend that the traditional chinese "medicine" was discovered by some ancient emperor who self tested all sorts of stuff until he turned green. GREEN.

geekygay:To add on to this, China did not see itself as part of the world, but as a 'Middle Kingdom' between Heaven and Earth. And as China was better than everyone else, of course the Emperor's gonna have powers to go along with it.Also they didn't quite have the same concept of 'heaven' as western societies do now.

2:i_broke_wahoos_leg:Blowing into a boiling pot seems a bit unlikely. I assume it was discovered by some brave dude who would just eat and make infusions out of everything he could get his hands on.

Catch_022:Or people who were starving to death and were trying to make leaf soup or something like that.

i_broke_wahoos_leg:True. Nothing like a nice cuppa before you keel over.

i_broke_wahoos_leg: Isn't the apple falling also a legend though?

Platypuslord: They have never proved that apples can fall so the legend persists.

aDickBurningRadiator: Only half true. Seeing a falling apple gave him some sort of inspiration and he recorded as such, the myth is that the apple bonked him on the head while he was sitting under the tree.

h1ghHorseman: "These animals from the forest fire are delicious!" that probably happened once or twice in our history, too, when people were moving back in the day after everything had burned down.

brahmidia:Let's be honest, the instant fire exists people will put random stuff into it to see if it burns... Cooking was invented roughly ten minutes after discovery of fire.

[deleted]:i don't think it was accidents at all. humans have a natural curiosity to try things to see what happens to it. if wood gets turned to ash when burned, what would happen to other stuff? oh look this meat slowly changes until it's black. what if i eat it now? how bout now? also the fact that meat smells fucking good when being cooked too.

[deleted]: in the modern world, almost everything edible is already eaten. you don't want to eat anything that other people havent already made a dish out of.

8:Vr00ms: Taoist monks had been studying the properties of plants and fauna for medicinal purposes. This is like the monks discovering beer.

9:tufted_wisdom: What the hell did they do with tea leaves before they made tea with them?

13:Vattu: That accident created one of the most bitter tasting drink I have ever drunk. Who drinks this stuff anyway?
