Even as Venezuelans fill the streets rallying behind opposition leader Juan Guaido and the list of foreign nations recognizing him as the country's rightful president grows, the top members of the all-important military are sending a different message: Forget about it.
"We have to wait and see what happens over the next 48 hours," said Jose Antonio Colina, a former army lieutenant. "If the middle- and low-ranking troops don't express their disagreement within the next two days, we can assume they're standing by their leadership."
The armed forces have traditionally served as an arbiter of political disputes, though according to the constitution backed by Chavez they are "not at the service of any person or political partisanship."
Exactly 61 years before Guaido pledged before swarms of supporters to serve as Venezuela's interim president, the military ousted dictator Marco Perez Jimenez, who fled on a plane to the Dominican Republic amid mounting unrest. Chavez as a young army commander staged a botched coup in 1992 and a decade later was briefly forced from power himself.
In recent years, hundreds have fled abroad seeking better economic prospects, and dozens have been jailed on suspicion of plotting against the government. On Monday, a few dozen national guardsmen seized a stockpile of assault rifles in a pre-dawn uprising that was quickly quashed.
Perhaps curiously, the military has not activated the emergency protocol known as "Plan Zamora" that has been used during previous unrest and gives troops authority to repress and control mass demonstration. One former general who spoke on condition of anonymity said that might be acknowledgement that disillusioned underlings wouldn't follow those orders.
Rocio San Miguel, a Caracas-based military expert, noted that while there were clashes Wednesday between protesters and state security forces, the mass protest where tens of thousands gathered to watch Guaido speak took place without confrontation.
On Thursday, one 19-year-old member of the National Guard, still with braces on his teeth, said he wouldn't want to be in the position of having to beat protesters. Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, he said he'd be outraged to apprehend "innocent people."
"What's going on in Venezuela," San Miguel said, "hasn't finished yet."

They should all, under protection of the military, agree to an instant election. This time fair and uncontested. The winner is president and gets to govern.

Your view is simplistic and naive.

You miss the point of the post Simply saying that people able to arm themselves have a better ability to start a revolution than an unarmed one. Has nothing to do with the orange man in the office

NO matter what happens in Venezuela, we (USA) should stay OUT OF IT. Who appointed us policeman of the world? Don't we have enough problems of our own here at home? Enough is enough. Let the people of the world decide their own fate.
VICTOR
The country will force its people out and guess where they will go, the USA with no border security. That's why we have to get involved.

The U.S wants to control their oil. They need to install a puppet who will afford them that control.

Russia built a submarine base there not long ago to make it easier to refuel, and repair nuclear armed subs that work off America's coastlines. If you don't understand what happened in Cuba, or strategic value of keeping communists out of our hemisphere, then maybe you should educate yourself...you won't sound so silly

I suppose you just stand there with your phone and record others being beaten to death. Coward.

Another Russian troll. I'm sure you'd like if the US stopped projecting influence across the Globe, so that Russia can step in, but it's not going to happen.

The refugee crisis means we're all in it whether you want or not

Always have been. If you're the single most powerful nation in the world, you either take up the role of world policeman or accept a lawless world. That said, it is not the policeman's job to decide who is in charge of a country's government.
Believe or not, Venezuela is buying gasoline from the U.S.A. as their oil industry has collapsed due to the lack of maintenance and resources. Caracas is currently the most dangerous city in the world. A good weekend you will see 70 to 100 people killed in violent crimes. The inflation is estimated to be over 1 Million percent. The Venezuelan government is the only responsible for this chaos.
SomeGuy
Someone is always pushing socialism because it is a great way to consolidate power and wealth. It made billionaires out of Venezuela's ruling elite. It never turns out to be lifting the poor up, but rather knocking the middle class down so that they are not a threat. If a relatively small group of people can keep the populace dependent on them then they will control the nation's wealth, which will naturally be directed to themselves.
TimothyP
Socialsm is everybody paying for the common good for things like schools, police, firemen, roads etc. Communism is giving according to you needs like in our military. You get base pay plus extra for your spouse, each children, housing, etc. Notice the rich capitolists like Trump pay no tax and never go in the military. They are more than willing to tale socialist money as being the job creators.

Military knows who the CIA patsy is and lets be honest Putin did it a lot better in the USA than our clumsy fools. another civil war another flood of refugees and the Trump trash will scream close the border.
Dan
Stay out of their civil war. Those countries have coups, and regime changes and uprisings regularly. Let's sit this one out.

Wherever there is the US influence, there is sectarian wars.

The US tactics grew primitive. Fund the "opposition", freeze the country's assets abroad, then push for "democratic" elections ahead of due time. The UK and EU are the ready accomplices.
For years, Maduro and before him Chavez have been nationalizing industries, and then ceding them over to various high ranking military leaders. This allows them to take the proceeds for themselves. They get very rich, in exchange for keep Maduro very powerful.
They all know that if Maduro falls, they will as well.
Brad
Because Maduro has given them huge payouts and unprecedented authority to enrich themselves?
Anthony
The most basic reason they support Maduro is because they don't want a foreign imperialist power running Venezuela. They don't want the US running their Homeland.
The "Election like most was completely illegitimate, being controlled by the ruling party and the rich upper class.

Takes a lot of money to keep the troops loyal and eventually it will run out and they turn on him
Dennis
They support him, because they are also raking in as much as they can get and hiding it in overseas bank accounts. Despoiling your own country can be very profitable.
Jeorge
The troops will turn on the brass and Maduro sooner or later. He is driving Venezuela into the ground and the people know it.
Alicia
You're completely right, but the amount of commenters on here praising Maduro just shows you how many people are uninformed and will willingly hand over their freedom and not think twice. It's sad really.
Aguilera
They're supporting him because they're the only people getting food. If they cut him down, they lose access to food.
S
No kidding, the Venezuelan Military is beholden to Maduro for accepting kick-backs, promotions and positions of power that they were not qualified to hold (let alone the conflict of interest)? They are complicit in Venezuela's demise. The plot thickens and a path forward to recovery is all the more muddled and distant. It will get worse before it gets better.
Pavel
The history of Latin America has always been clear on matters such as this -- whomever the military supports will be president. As far as those saying Washington will get involved, they have more pressing matters in mind dealing with the longest government shutdown in history and no long-term budget deal yet with the risk of another shutdown on 2/15. Couple that with Trump's lack of popularity, there isn't a chance he has of getting support for a military incursion in Venezuela which isn't even a militaristic threat.
