Nathan Do
In my opinion, the average Vietnamese dislikes China, effectively holds negative view towards Mainland Chinese. Generally speaking, i think it should not be this way, and Vietnamese have a lot to learn from the Chinese (of course, just the good part). But i disagree with Ha Anh on what are the reasons for the hatre, so here are my reasons.
Why do Vietnamese dislike Chinese (Mainland) ?
· Instinct to preserve our own identity. Sound weird but it’s true. During the 1000 year of Chinese colonization, if Vietnamese actually like China, the current country Vietnam would have ceased to exist. That is to say our ancestors held this sentiment strongly against the Chinese, consistently for the preservation of our own identity/independence. It imprints the hatre in Vietnamese generations even till this day. The whole point is to emphasize, we are NOT them.
· Like in a few other countries, Vietnamese encounter bad impressionon Chinese tourists on their home land (not that our own travelers are much better but still). This created a bad impression on Chinese people as a whole. Also it seems common for the lower educated Chinese tourists to think of Vietnam as part of China. That doesn’t help at all.
· Worry about fake/toxic food originated from China. This is brought to light by the media. The average Vietnamese cannot understand that these bad Chinese also done this to their own people.
· The border war between Vietnam and China was quite recent (1979). And people in the north still have horror memories of that. China’s stand in that war was to “teach Vietnam a lesson” and destroyed Northern Vietnam’s economy, which they did achieve at a costly price (10–100 thousands of casualties).
· Intangible fear of being annexed to China. China’s economy and military’ve been growing exponentially for the last few decades. Together with aggression in the South China Sea, the general sentiment is definitely bad.
Now here is a big twist, the most important reason why currently, Vietnamese hate Chinese (or China) is because their government wants it to be so. And they have been successful. But why ?
· The government doesn’t want its citizen to start question why under the same socialism structure but China has been more successful in term of economics, welfare, military, etc.
· Making use of patriotism is the easiest way to blindfold a Vietnamese. So there you have it, an aggressive, giant neighbor, full of pollution, poisonous foods and want to take advantage of us any point in time. Now, hate them, not us, your own government!
· Blaming China for every little issue will make the citizens forget that who actually governs and let all these issues happen in the first place.
Then how did they do that ? Simple, MEDIA
· I’ve been following Vietnamese news for more than 20 years and i have rarely seen any article about how miraculously Beijing or Shanghai have grown (or any of China’s cities/provinces for that matter). To compare it with Singapore there are plenty of articles about this city.
· Why Cuba or North Korea were mentioned a lot instead ? Because they does not have the same growth as China. So the citizens look at those and think they are still pretty lucky to stay in Vietnam.
· Amplify all the food scandals from China, fake goods, bad quality, dirty business tactics done by Chinese businessman to Vietnamese farmers, bad pollution in China, aggression by China, etc. Basically anything bad about China, the government is playing victim here. When you think of it, you realize if they are capable no one can do these tricks to us.
· There is no chart to show you that China economy left Vietnam’s for dust since around 1990. Before that we are not much different in term of GDP per capita
I think it’s important for Vietnamese to see the whole picture. The more you know the less you hate. Because there are good and bad people everywhere. Bad Chinese businessmen who produce fake/toxic food harms their own peopleeven before harming us. And it’s Vietnamese who brought those things deep into our land, should we start hating ourselves too ?
My point: stop the hatre, start learning instead.
Edit:
About the intangible fear mentioned above, i think it is not totally baseless. But it’s more about worrying of China’s involvement with the gov.
You see even though, the gov doesn’t want us to like China, they still have benefits in working with China.
Therefore, it creates big scandals like Formosa Ha Tinh Steel - Wikipedia(Taiwanese company with Chinese stakeholder) causing mass fish death, making life miserable for the fisherman. Also this company employed 10,000s Mainland Chinese, which created their own isolated China town within Ha Tinh. You tell me how can the locals not be pissed.
Another bad project would be the Dự án khai thác bô xít ở Tay Nguyên – Wikipedia tiếng Việt, where we paid for using old Chinese technology, import low cost Labour from Mainland and end up destroying our own environment.
These scandals plus the sheer number of Chinese tourists keep increasing created that intangible fear.

I’m going to be honest, this will break many hearts. But when Vietnamese make fun of everything related to China, its almost like hating themselves. I’ll explain why this is.
I’m a Vietnamese from Ho Chi Minh City, I grew up watching Chinese dramas but hating China. I hated every bit of China, calling Chinese people “Chinese dogs”. Basically I used to be one of those angry nationalists on YouTube or Facebook calling for the extermination of China. I REALLY HATED CHINESE, EVERYTHING CHINESE: products, food, anything halfway related to china I would hate.
I was 19 when I first went to China, I was sort of excited but also sort of afraid. I told myself I was afraid because I was going to be in a new place or something like that, but I was really fooling myself, I probably knew at the back of my head that this was going to happen.
I stepped foot in China and wandered around the city, it really felt EXACTLY LIKE HO CHI MINH CITY. The people look similar, the food looks similar, the people act similar, the way people walk and talk looks similar. Everything was similar.
When I went abroad to Australia, I can usually tell the difference between lets say a korean and a viet or a japanese and a viet or a indonesian and a viet. But no matter how hard I tried i couldn’t find a way to distinguish a viet and a Chinese. Our way of living is really that similar!
I faced a crisis, i realized by hating on China so much I was really hating on Vietnam as well.
This will probably make people mad, and make others want to kill me, but really. The culture difference between VN and CN is basically the difference between two Chinese provinces like Bejing or Guangzhou, Im dead serious.
I really wanted to hate China, I really wanted to continue holding my grudge for the thousand year occupation of my country: The Bac Thuoc. But I simply couldn’t, everything was so similar, down to food, culture, clothing, way of life.
I am now of the opinion that most of Vietnamese culture is originally Chinese in origin, and thus I really can’t hate China. I’m not kidding if Vietnam spoke cantonese we’d basically be a part of China, South China and Vietnam are really really similar.
So I say, most Vietnamese HATE HATE China, but, I can no longer do so, because hating Chinese culture is like hating Vietnam. It sort of halfway broke my heart when I realized this.

No I don't hate the Chinese. In fact I think Chinese culture is good for Vietnam. And the Chinese occupation did more good to Vietnam than bad.
If the Chinese did not influence Vietnam, we would be similar to many Southeast Asian tribes. No offence but just look at the Philippines, Vietnam had 30 years of war and now we are on par with them. No offence but even Vietnamese can see that the Laotians and Cambodians are much more lazier than us. Even the French could see the same thing and that's why they said “The Vietnamese plant the rice, the Cambodians watch it grow and the Laos listen to it grow.”
Northern civilizations are always more advanced than Southern ones. It's not a coincident that Chinese communities control every single economy in Southeast Asia. I used to think it was because the colonizers allowed them to control trade but I was really wrong. The Chinese have cultural values that are superior to the native tribes. Otherwise they won't make up a majority of Thailand’s rich people when it was never a colonized country.
Not to mention all the positive things the Chinese brought: system of central government, writing, architecture, money, literature and art, army structure, war tactics, a lots of skills like making silk, pottery, martial arts. A lot of these things were standardized in China and introduced to Vietnam before many countries in the world. Vietnam moved away from the barter system because the Chinese introduced coins and bank notes. Thus Vietnam was one of the first countries in the world to have a money system. The Chinese also introduced their trade culture and concept of nation state. And thank god for that, because Vietnamese now have a strong trade culture. You can see everyone tries to own a business and sell something in Vietnam no matter how small it is. You can also see that Vietnam has a strong unified identity, contrary to all our neighbours who are divided by ethnic divisions. You also see the strong education value that Vietnamese have. And this is why the whole world is surprised with our PISA result (not me).
I might be hated for saying this but I'm so glad Vietnam got influenced by the Chinese and the Chinese came and settled in Vietnam. You see those Vietnamese men sitting drinking coffee the entire day doing nothing. Yea, if Vietnam was never under Chinese influence, just multiply that by 10 times. I am actually sad that a lot of the Chinese left Vietnam after the war. If we kept more of those people Vietnam might actually develop much faster now. They are now so successful overseas.
It's one thing to hate China’s aggression towards Vietnam but we cannot deny their superior culture and that we have benefitted from adopting it.
In conclusion: I am angry and hate China when it bullies Vietnam. But I do not hate the Chinese. I admire them and the Chinese civilization.
