China Starts "Debt Shaming": New App Warns Users If They Are Walking Near Someone In Debt
Authorities in the northern Chinese province of Hebei have rolled out an app over WeChat which can tell people if they're walking near someone in debt, according to China Daily.
The program, aptly named "map of deadbeat debtors," flashes a warning if someone in debt is within a 500-meter radius - showing their exact location according to a screenshot of the app.
Whether the app reveals the debtors' names or photos is unknown, nor does China Daily mention how much money is owed or to whom - but according to paper the app allows people to "whistle-blow on debtors capable of paying their debts."
"It's a part of our measures to enforce our rulings and create a socially credible environment," said a spokesman for the Higher People's Court of Hebei - which is behind the app.
The "map of deadbeat debtors" is yet the latest in China's push towards a shame-based "social credit score" system which has already been deployed in several parts of the country. According to a November report, Beijing has an ambitious plan to control China's citizens through a system of social scoring that punishes behavior it does not approve.
Some critics warn the new system is fraught with risks and could reduce humans to little more than a report card, said Bloomberg.
"The system is able to identify 40 facial features, regardless of angles and lighting, at an accuracy rate of 99.8 percent," reported the People's Daily. "It can also scan faces and compare them with its database of criminal suspects at large at a speed of 3 billion times a second, indicating that all Chinese people can be compared in the system within only one second."

This app would overheat your phone and cause it to catch fire if used here in the United States. I had a shitty job some 15 years or so ago doing collections for subprime auto loans (before anyone really used the term). I was amazed by the fact that it's not just newer/nicer cars that are financed, but old shitty beaters as well. For these people with terrible credit, they were financed at 2% as well. They were upside-down immediately and would abandon the car and loan if anything went wrong. Most of them weren't even worth repoing/auctioning.

I love what China is doing here. We have it here in the U.S., it's just not out in the open or being pursued in such a matter. How do we have it here?, public records, health records, employment records, your FB or linkedln website, your friends all intrinsincly know what your financial status is, as does the IRS, and government, not to mention those pesky CC companies, and banks. Any police infractions, the insurance companies have you down for it, etc., etc. It's all the same, except government doesn't care or even have the $ or resources to even attempt anything like China is doing. They will become a much stronger and safer society as a result. Here no, lol, people the smartphone zombies will still walk out into the street and be run over, then blame game, lawyers, doctors, oh it's so good for GDP really.
Behavioral modification is the future, but here, no, cop killers will continue, mass shootings will continue, robberies, and random killings of people on the street or sitting innocently in their homes. We don't care, and the psycho-drama of the TV will continue to show people that it's ok to try to get away with all this "stuff". Our police are just cleaners, they clean up afterwards.
[–]MezjENot sure about the China but in the US it would give warnings nonstop...

that's exactly what it is,
because people will stop being your friend or associate due to them getting low scores just being associated with you. these scores, from the articles I've read can even impact your ability to travel abroad. it affects offers and deals you can get at retail shops. I think it impacts job offers.
I am glad I'm not a Chinese citizen at the moment as my social credit score would probably have me executed on sight. I'm so anti-social lmao.

The scores literally affect every aspect of a citizen's life. Travel. Job opportunities. Loan/financial opportunities. It's crazy. Plus with all the cameras linked in to a facial recognition database, you can't even jaywalk without getting a hit on your score.
A bad score isn't an inconvenience. It's a literal ball & chain.
However, as someone who's spent some time in China, I can kind of see where they were going with this. I don't agree with it at all, but I can see why a high level bureaucrat thought that this was a good idea.
China's population is insane. The density one of their "mid-sized" cities experience puts anything in the US to shame. With those billions of people, there's a HUGE portion of folks who have no concept of basic public behavior. We're talking billions of people who think it's okay to piss/shit in public, push their way through lines, etc, etc. The social score system is an extremely heavy handed way to fight back at the crappy habits of the average Chinese citizen.
Guess time will tell if it works.

Do remember China has only really opened their borders for a relatively short period of time and have become the production capital of the world.
you know, for some odd reason I never take this into consideration until someone mentions it. but you're absolutely correct, hadn't even looked at it from that point.
