Beijing: Customs at China's northern port of Dalian has banned imports of Australian coal and will cap overall coal imports from all sources for 2019 at 12 million tonnes, an official at Dalian Port Group has told Reuters.
The indefinite ban on imports from top supplier Australia, effective since the start of February, comes as major ports elsewhere in China prolong clearing times for Australian coal to at least 40 days.
Imports through Dalian comprise only 1.8 per cent of Australia's total coal exports.
However if the reported ban reflects a more significant deterioration in the trade relationship between Australia and China, it could have a broader impact, National Australia Bank chief economist of markets Ivan Colhoun said in a note on Thursday.
Five harbours overseen by Dalian customs - Dalian, Bayuquan, Panjin, Dandong and Beiliang - will not allow Australian coal to clear through customs, said the Dalian port official, who wished to remain anonymous.
The Dalian ports handled about 14 million tonnes of coal last year, half of which was from Australia, according to Orient Futures analyst Gu Meng.
Beijing has been trying to restrict imports of coal more generally to support domestic prices.
Dalian customs accounted for 7 per cent of China's total coal imports in 2018, according to a report from consultancy Wood Mackenzie.

Pea brain: The coal ban has nothing to do with diplomatic tensions.
Normal brain: The coal ban is the Chinese applying financial pressure to achieve political aims.
Big brain: The coal ban is not broad enough to be effective, thus it is more of a threat than an actual attack, and a threat that they are unlikely to make good on given their reliance on imported energy.
Galaxy brain: Actually, the coal ban is good because the coal industry is bad and needs to die to meet our climate goals.

Hmmm... you are right about the CO2, although reading the article again it says that this mainly affects coking coal, which has to be high grade.

Does that factor in the emissions from shipping the coal from australian mine to chinese power plant?
The shitty fuel that most shipping tankers burn is some of the most polluting fossil fuels around, and those ships burn a metric fuckton of it an hour.

maybe we should stop exporting milk powder to them too citing safety/price/whatever.. that will teach them a lesson!

Maybe we should stop letting them buy our farms, our Ports, our industries, maybe we should retaliate when they hack our cyber security? Maybe we should just tell them to fuck off?
Nah...
Betting our gov does utterly nothing but trash talk and play the blame game.

It’s one port in China that did this right? Not all of China? The headline seems sensationalized.

Threatening 1pc of a single export, no, it's strategy in negotiations.
