There was a saying that the war was won with British brains American steel and Soviet blood. This is a generalization of course but not far from the truth.

It's a bit of an exaggeration to say that the US defeated Japan nearly single-handedly. The Chinese contribution was significant and the British contribution in the Pacific theatre was also quite significant. Australia provided much of the logistics support.

The Soviets started out as the bad guys.

If things had been just a little different the Soviets could have lost at Stalingrad and that would have been disastrous.

Am I saying that the American contribution to the war against the Nazis was greater than the Soviet contribution? No. But without American support the Soviet contribution simply could not have been as great as it was. In fact the best possible scenario for them probably would have been a stalemate somewhere in Eastern Europe.

My answer talks about the USA because that is what the question is about and I also talk about the USSR because people sometimes suggest that the Soviets basically beat the Nazis alone. No one says that about the British.

No I don’t see how you can really know that. It’s mostly just something European war and history buffs say to sniff at Americans.
