A major announcement from the UN health bodyfollows a review of 1,000 scientific studies

Drinking very hot drinks such as coffee or tea“probably” causes cancer, the UN has said.

联合国称，喝非常热的饮料，像咖啡或者茶，“可能”会致癌。

It is believed the temperature, rather than thesubstance of the drinks, causes cancer of the oesophagus and becomes a riskonce beverages have a temperature above 65C, AFP reports. The announcementfollows a review of more than 1,000 scientific studies on whether there is alink between coffee and cancer, conducted by the International Agency forResearch on Cancer (IARC).

Christopher Wild, agency director, said: “Theseresults suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause ofoesophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinksthemselves, that appears to be responsible.”

该研究机构主任ChristopherWild指出，“研究结果表明，喝非常热的饮料是导致食道癌的一个可能因素，而且引起癌症的是饮料的温度而非饮料本身”

A spokesperson for the IARC said: ”Studies inplaces such as China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey and South America,where tea or mate is traditionally drunk very hot (at about 70C) found that therisk of oesophageal cancer increased with the temperature at which the beveragewas drunk.

In response to the findings, Casey Dunlop,health information officer at Cancer Research UK,said: “Most people in the UKdon't consume drinks at the temperatures considered in this research, althoughvery hot tea is a popular drink in Middle Eastern and other countries.

“There is some evidence that drinking very hotdrinks over 65C may increase the risk of oesophageal (food pipe) cancer. So aslong as you let your drink cool down a bit before you drink it, you're unlikelyto be much at risk.”

“某些研究证据表明，喝温度超过65摄氏度的饮料可能会增加患食管（食道）癌的风险。所以，只要在喝饮料前，把饮料冷一会，就没那么大的风险患食道癌。”

The World Health Organisation is due to make anumber of announcements today on health concerns and benefits of drinking hotbeverages such as coffee. In 1991, the IARC announced coffee "possiblycaused cancer". However, the health body is expected to revise that todayto suggest other than concerns over temperature, there is insufficient evidenceto say coffee itself causes cancer.

因此，在健康问题及喝诸如咖啡之类热饮料的益处方面，世界卫生组织目前发出了大量公告。1991年，国际癌症研究机构（IARC）宣布，咖啡“可能致癌”。然而，健康机构现在应该修正此说法，改为温度致癌而不是只关注咖啡本身，毕竟没有足够的证据表明咖啡本身会致癌。

This has been known about since the 70s.Obviously if the mucosa of the oesophagus become damaged from scalding or acidreflux the cancer risk is increased.

BTW: There was research in the 70s which I readof as a small boy (as a son and grandson of doctors!) which found highoesophageal cancer amongst Chinese men who were traditionally served their soupvery hot and fresh, whereas women had to wait their turn and did not haveunnaturally high rates.

....we already know that every damage to everycell has a chance of causing cancer. Nothing new.
This is not about "hot drinks" this isabout scalding. The fact that there is evidence that being scalded carries riskof cancer only supports current research regarding sun-tanning and UV exposure.
In reality, tea and coffee are perfectly okay todrink.
