It's amusing taiwan call's itself the republic of china as well. So there are 2 chinas now a big one and a small one. And we have America supporting small china that hardly makes a blip in the world economic radar while fabricating excuses to kick big china in the butt who happens to be their biggest business partner at the expense of billions of dollars in economic retaliations. Nice. It's delicate and sensitive enough that these 2 "countries" have to work out their historical conflicts and now we have the U.S jumping into the pot to stir things up. Indeed we are seeing a recipe for disaster in the making.

Some nations desperately want to break up China into smaller pieces.
The way to do it:
1. Magnify the differences and ignore the common to create identity.
2. Keep repeating the 1 until the people believe in it.
3. Support and nurse a few key members from the group to help spread the identity on the ground.

5. Encourage the people to self-determination.
6. Directly involve if the people are too slow to act.

Repeat this day by day eventually people's mindset will be influenced to believe that Mainland and Taiwan are two "nations".

Look like the current Taiwan government doesn't fully commit working for independence. Not sure what the government is doing right now. It has majority in the parliament and still there is no sign of moving for independence.

Now is the time for Washington to show support for Taiwan.
Sure the past might have been correct to switch from acknowledging Taiwan to mainland China just to counter the old USSR but now that threat is gone and time to switch back to the old alliance and give Taiwan the support it deserves.
