China's newest military transport planeentered service Wednesday, the country's defence ministry said, extendingBeijing's ability to deploy its fighting forces around the world as it pursuesa greater global role.

中国最新运输机周三开始服役，中国国防部称。随着北京寻求更大的全球角色，该运输机将加强北京在全球部署战斗力量的能力。

The announcement comes with tensionsmounting over territorial disputes between Beijing and its neighbours in theEast and South China seas.

The Y-20 is the country's largest homegrowntransport aircraft, a statement on the defence ministry's website said.
