India and China are on a collision course. They boast the world’s two largest populations two of the fastest growing economies on the globe and aspirations to lead the way into a new Asian century. The two nations’ fates will be intertwined for decades to come. Troublingly China’s move last week to block Indian membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is merely the latest sign of tension to emerge between the two Asian giants. Further competition and even confrontation await.

Competition between rising powers is hardly new or surprising. This particular case however shows China’s intent to remain the sole Asian power stretching from Siberia to the Arabian Sea. This was most recently demonstrated last week when China led the push to exclude India from the NSG. Membership in the prestigious group which controls the trade of nuclear material and related technologies would facilitate India’s nuclear power production. While legitimate concerns remain about India’s status as a nuclear state Prime Minister Modi’s bid was backed by the United States Britain France and many others. These advocates could not overcome resistance spearheaded by the Chinese delegation in a move that many Indians saw as purely political.

The only reason India is beefing up its military capbilities is China. The unintended consequence of this is a huge tech upgrade of India employment for many thousands to make and use these weapons. So in a strange way China is helping India become a superpower. Given the 20 years or so lead that China has they are far superior at the present time but this will not be the case in a decade or so...the buildup in India is rapid and technology is a great equalizer. Given this I do not see war but tensions will remain high for the forseeable future. China does not want a competitor in Asia but is and will be unable to do anything about it. They can use Pakistan to create diversions but its only going to strengthen India's resolve to spend even more on the military. Its going to be interesting!

Let's not be so disingenuous as to believe that the US is for enlarging permanent membership to the UN Security Council. The US pays lip service to Japan India and Germany's aspirations but only because it's a safe way to look sympathetic. Washington knows increased membership means more vetoes to deal with which means more countries to deal with on more or less an equal footing - NOT something Washington has been known to indulge.

I believe what we have here is a case of redefining the phrase "divide and conquer." The US plays the nice guy by promising what it has no real intention of giving up while casting the other guy as the "bad cop" for saying exactly what it is we had on our mind in the first place.

That’s simply untrue. Both China and India trust Russia more than the US. That’s how Russia managed to bring India and Pakistan into SCO (at the time of Brexit to add insult to injury).

that is true sir. India was forced to join the Russian group by Nehru and Indira due to US support of Pak. Russia came and stood by India. President Bush approval rate in India was 84% when it was under 40% In USA. majority of people in India want good relations with USA as we have democracy constitution secularism and free market and many things which US loves. But US dealing with islamic dictatorsm communist dictators and not recognizing India's contribution at the UN in many ways has pushed India to wards many european and African and south american nations. Hope US stands by India.

All chinese neighbors are scared f China's expansionist designs. US having invested very heavily may sell weapons to India but may not stand by India as US also has close relations with Pakistan in spite of Pak hiding Bin laden and exportng terror all over. Modi knows that India has to stand on its own with weapons and with the help of people who hate China. As both china and India are nuclear powers they know that any war means millions will die and economy will be destroyed.they will think hundred times before waging a war. US did not help India in getting 70000 acres of Indian land occupied by china in1962. US is a friend for India no doubt. But Indian govt does not want to depend on US.
