The New York Times editorial board has condemned the GOP’s new platform just authorized at the Republican National Convention as the “most extreme” in memory. This may well be the case but the platform is also remarkable for something the Times does not comment on: belligerence and a new cynicism towards China. To show how this really is something new this article reviews GOP platforms since Nixon’s rapprochement with China and traces the evolution thereafter of GOP disillusionment.

In 1972 the Republican platform boasted “President Nixon’s visit to the People's Republic of China was . . . an historic milestone in his effort to transform our era from one of confrontation to one of negotiation.” Relations between the two countries were seen as promoting “an important contribution to world peace” as the 1976 platform reaffirmed. Despite cultural and political differences the relationship was based above all on “the need to maintain peace and stability in Asia” as the 1980 platform put it. In 1984 Republicans spelled out what they meant by the euphemistic “peace and stability”: “Despite fundamental differences in many areas both nations share an important common obxtive: opposition to Soviet expansionism.” By 1988 when Reagan’s détente with the USSR was in full swing the platform approved later that year cut out the anti-Soviet rhetoric basing the U.S.–China relationship instead on “mutually beneficial trade” and China’s continued economic and political opening up.

The next US president whoever he or she may be will soon learn that US exceptionalism is thing of the past. China will not accept double standard. If US accuses China of currency manipulation then be prepared to open up their own record for examination e.g quantitative easing.

You do realize the money-printing is bad for your static income and savings right? There's a limit to how much international market can gobble up the dollar. That dollar in your pocket will worth less the more money Feds print.

I like the 2016 GOP platform on China. It shows maturity. I am going to support the GOP ticket for U.S. President based on the 2016 GOP China platform.

Trump is for peace most people who values peace will support Trump.
If you are for war like neo cons you will support Hillary.
All the hardcore neo cons are flocking over to Hillary and rejecting Trump. Only Hillary can satisfy their lust for war chaos and destruction.

Strange as it sounds there's more chance of WWIII happening under Hillary who along with Obama initiated the "pivot to Asia" policy that moves US military hardware away from Middle East/ISIS theater to Chinese theater.
In the end ISIS has no chance of actually fighting a WWIII with US but every stray shot along Chinese shores can start it. Trump's vow to withdraw military from China's front door do more to prevent the possibility of nuclear holocaust than Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. His intended purpose of saving money is an added benefit.
Hillary on the other hands intends to escalate the arms race with the only country that can both serve as a justification for it and is capable of it (it's not ISIS) to placate the military industrial complex as any shrewd politician would do.

William Pitt
It is wishful thinking the GOP is changing its agenda on China. It's all in the rhetoric. The GOP has always been backed by big business. Big business has trillions invested in China. When China doesn't get what it wants in the world it will squeeze big business. Then big business will squeeze the GOP. Then the GOP will give whatever China wants.
The Dems are also in bed with business too. Witness Bill Clinton backed big business by embracing GOP idea and brain child NAFTA. NAFTA was started by Reagan. Embraced and pushed forward by Bush Sr. Signed by Bill Clinton. NAFTA has virtually destroyed millions of good paying American jobs putting millions of Americans out of work. When it comes down to American values or China big business will always back China. American values like freedom human rights and other tangible ideals are only good if they're free. And nothing is free.

I don't doubt that what you're saying is true and more. My point was a geopolitical one: The expanding Empire of Japan vs the expanding Empire of China. Political and commercial partners/dependencies of Western powers will see their expenses rise with "Yuan Imperialism" just as we saw our relative costs increase with "Yen Imperialism." The Chinese are using the same prism of history to view their role in the South China Sea (and the East China Sea) as did Japan while seeking to exact the same economic toll on the West through dominance of the region.

I agree. Japan was a brutal state - killing and inflicting a lot of pains and sufferings to millions of people in Asia. But that was a long time ago. Japan has moved on to join the world community and become a civilized country.
Now China is embracing this brutal past of Japan. They are destroying millions of lives and livelihoods. They are wiping out cultures in Tibet and Xinjiang. China is not the only country with a brutal past. The difference between China and the rest of the civilized world is people learned from their past so they try to make their futures better. China on the other hand is going backward in time.
