Not sure, as I haven't made professional scientific diagnosis but my personal experience over a decade has been slightly larger than meer millions

I think the main problem is mental illness is not widely accepted in China (not that it is much better in the western world). China mentality is to squeeze the square peg into the round hole.

I private tutor one kid who is definitely on the autistic spectrum, but seems totally undiagnosed... his parents and teachers just describe him as a little strange, and don't really know what to do with him except double down on the discipline if he stops concentrating on his work.

On the other hand, there often seems to be an overliteral approach to almost anything... in another of my private classes, I used to often use "tell a true and false fact about yourself" as an ice breaker, except 80% of the time I would just hear "I'm a student, and I'm 24 years old" and it was funny because they're actually 23

The overliteral approach to things probably stem from their education.

Yeah, probably. Primary school kids have a bit more imagination but it seems to get beaten out of them at middle school.

I used to work with autistic kids and am pretty good at spotting them...I'm honestly surprised at how many there are.
There are three that I know for damn sure are autistic at just my apartment complex alone (and then there's me of course...).

Don't most of them end up in the Huangpi river or the village well though?

If you read the book "The barefoot lawyer" He describes how people in mental illnesses were and still are locked up in rooms and shoved food under the door until they die.

By international standards, many MANY Chinese are socially inept, they lack the basic set of social skills required to interact normally with other people, they lack the knowledge and body language as well. But by Chinese standards, those who are creeps abroad (i.e. a majority of the locals) are the norm here.

Well how could they diagnose them?! Don't you know how much shame that would bring on the prestigious nong family?! Nope, much better to pretend there's no problem and batter the shit out of xiao junior any time he acts up at school, at home, anywhere! /s

Many people with autism have amazing abilities. We human as a whole need more of them.
