RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Los Angeles Lakers are finalizing a deal to bring China star Yi Jianlian back to the NBA according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN that the Lakers and Yi have agreed to terms and are in the latter stages of cementing a one-year deal in the $8 million range for the veteran forward to return to the NBA for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

What a great business move. His jersey sale will be top 10 globally next year. Lakers game will have the most audiences too. NBA is a money generating business. How hard is it for ppl to understand this?

Maybe but he didn't make the Nets nearly as much money as Yao used to make the Rockets - and that was back when he could still play. There's a reason he hasn't been in the NBA for 5 years and no one including Chinese people are going to tune in or buy jerseys for a guy who is out there embarrassing himself.

I think Yi Jianlian has a chance to be a productive starter on a bad team or an excellent 6th man.

When he was just 22 years old he put up his best season with the Nets - 31 mins/gm 12 pts/gm 7.2 reb/gm 1 blk/gm. The problem was that he only shot 40% from the field but he did shoot 37% from 3PT.

That's what I keep saying I'm shocked at all of this Yi bashing by people who probably haven't been watching the Olympics. I work from home and August is my slowest month so I've been watching most of the daytime games when China has generally been on and they're team is HORRIBLE but Yi still put up great stats and passed the eye test as well. I mean the guy is 7'0" 260lbs and athletic who wouldn't want that on their team!? I think people also forget he came out of China to the NBA and China is notoriously bad at developing talent. Now with his NBA training and a lot more international exposure he has a chance to really develop. I wish my team had signed him to be honest.

Great move by the Lakers. Yi is a much better player now than when he got drafted. He can be a productive rotation player for the Lakers. If it doesn't pan out it is just a one year deal.

I thought that was a good pick for the Lakers (on the court and to sell a few jerseys in China) when then first announced it but 8 Million seems a bit high but then again everybody in the NBA seems to be getting ridiculous paycheck lately so why not!?

He usually performs like a superstar in international play but I doubt he's improved all that much. I hope he gets playing time atleast...I didn't like how Coach Carlisle always benched him when we had him in Dallas.

At 28 .. a prime age for most athletes .. this will be his one last chance to make it in NBA .. He was lucky to be chosen as a lottery pick then .. 3 years guarantee $ .. didn't have to endure CBA .. but playing CBA (China) instead .. making a name for himself there and international competition .. hoping his perseverance will pay off as Lakers .. Best Wishes

John Harris this is an odd signing though $8M is a lot for a guy who it's hard to see contributing much. It's good you see Kobe leaving as a positive - his hanging on for no real reason or benefit for either him or the Lakers means this rebuilding program is already 2 years behind schedule now.
