Nature's 2016 resource 'budget' already used up,report says
Paris (AFP) - In just over seven months, humanity hasused up a full year's allotment of natural resources such as water, food andclean air -- the quickest rate yet, according to a new report.
The point of "overshoot" will officially bereached on Monday, said environmental group Global Footprint Network -- fivedays earlier than last year.
"We continue to grow our ecological debt,"said Pascal Canfin of green group WWF, reacting to the annual update.
"From Monday August 8, we will be living oncredit because in eight months we would have consumed the natural capital thatour planet can renew in a year."
The gloomy milestone is marked every year on what isknown as Earth Overshoot Day.
In 1993, the day fell on October 21, in 2003 onSeptember 22 and last year on August 13.
In 1961, according to the network, humankind used onlyabout three-quarters of Earth's annual resource allotment. By the 1970s, economicand population growth sent Earth into annual overshoot.
"This is possible because we emit more carbondioxide into the atmosphere than our oceans and forests can absorb, and wedeplete fisheries and harvest forests more quickly than they can reproduce andregrow," the network said in a statement.
Global Footprint Network
To calculatethe date for Earth Overshoot Day, the group crunches UN data on thousands ofeconomic sectors such as fisheries, forestry, transport and energy production.
Earth-warming greenhouse gas emissions, it said, arenow the fastest-growing contributor to ecological overshoot, making up 60percent of humanity's demands on nature .
According to the UN, the number of people on Earth isforecast to grow from 7.3 billion today to 11.2 billion by the end of thecentury -- piling further pressure on our planet and its finite resources.

I don't think it is something we can completelydismiss as the paranoid delusions of econuts spurred by solar/wind lobbypropaganda. I would like however, more information.
Sure, if we burn more carbon than can be absorbed intocarbon sinks, the excess drifts around in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide andmethane. This in turn leads to warming by means of the "greenhouseeffect" .This is bad, because our sister planet, Venus, has an atmospherecomposed mostly of carbon dioxide.
Now some would have us believe our activity could leadEarth to the same fate. But will it? One crucial piece of information ismissing from all these reports I read. If we were to take all the coal, oil, natural gas etc. that is available on the Earth and burn all of it, howconcentrated will carbon molecules in the atmosphere become? If it's onlyenough to raise the planet a few degrees, then is it really problem? Bydefinition the concentration will drop every year after that since there'snothing left to combust and there will be an "undershoot" every year.

And yet the only "solution" is spendingmoney to reduce CO2 emissions. How about efforts to limit population growth?Wouldn't that also help alleviate other problems like starvation, lack ofpotable water, etc?

So in just a few more years we will use up a year'sworth by the middle of January.

For heaven's sake -- the photo accompanying the article, captioned that greenhouse gases are killing us, shows what appears to be anuclear power plant. If so, then the "gas" you see emerging is 100%water vapor. Smh

More Liberal tripe. Quick, everyone run around theroom, flap your arms, and shout "The sky is falling!"

Gee, so if we stop eating and breathing until Jan. 1,every thing will be OK?
What a bunch of hooey.
