A new report from California-based HackerRank a service that administers tests to developers around the world says it's China.

Second place goes to Russia and Poland takes bronze. Traditional programming powerhouses like the US and India came in at 28th and 31st respectively.

HackerRank offers its community of programmers apparently 1.5 million strong with challenges to hone their skills. It examined data from these challenges from the last few years to come up with the rankings scoring developers from different countries and finding national averages.   "According to our data China and Russia score as the most talented developers. Chinese programmers outscore all other countries in mathematics functional programming and data structures challenges while Russians dominate in algorithms the most popular and most competitive arena" according to HackerRank.

The US's position at No. 28 behind countries like Japan Greece and Chile might seem odd especially for the country that basically birthed the internet and created so many of the coding tools used today. This could potentially correlate to a lower emphasis on maths and science in American schools as this Pew Research report details.

This is also not the first time that America has been humbled by the likes of China and Russia in the programming arena. At the collegiate level during the recent ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest schools from China and Russia beat out the likes of Harvard and MIT.

I love the comments from Indians in here. Indians have never been great programmers. Don't mistake being the cheapest outsourcing programmers for only the English speaking world as being great programmers. That's why there are lot of Indian programmers and not because they're the best. Every international programming competition has their rankings very similar.

Too many anti-China elements are here to fool others with their anti-China comments that can only fool the fools.  Americans are so easily fooled by the anti-China elements who constantly make lies about China to fool others.  Because of this most Americans have outdated information regarding China today.  They still think China today is China 40 years ago.  Americans love to put others down in order to feel more superior than others.  How stupid that is!  No wonder China is rising and the US is declining.  China don't complain advance US but the US constantly bashing rising China in fear that China will catching up.  When China was poor and less advance the US complain.  Now when China getting richer and more advanced they complain again.

@wilson8888 There are some Americans like that. There are some Chinese who think most Americans think like that. Both are mistaken. I've been watching the rise of China ever since the time of Deng Xao Ping and admiring how they've done it. And it's not just manufacturing. It's the Olympics the International Mathematical Olympiad their space program.
While we Americans hope we can be the best at all sorts of things and lead the world in science and in social systems destiny does not grant eternal greatness to any nation or people. Some day and possible some day not too far off China will have to step up and lead. And your own society still has its faults. There is a lot of corruption and a tendency to build things that are not wanted or useful just because a job is a job.
And I'm sorry to say a growing tendency to jingoism. Your greatness is not in your military. It never works that way for any nation.

The USA rank is actually 128 thanks to India her rank rises to 28 while India rank number 1 drops to 31...
I went to school with both Indians and Chineses. I know them both...Indians are good at inventing Chineses are good at copycatting and regurgitating memorized facts.
Kudos to India and God Bless the USA.

@rock3times Actually my impression is that Chinese are hardworking and the Indians are lazy.  Chinese work out and come up with their own products but Indians buy other's technology so China will lead and independent from others but India will always follow and be dependent of others.

There'a alot more to being a good programmer than just raw technical skills.  Programming doesn't occur in a vacuum it occurs in a complex sometimes very stressful usually less than perfect work environment where communication skills and cultural fit with your team are as important as raw talent.  Factor in real life and you'll have a much different result..

that is no news at all. this has been known since years.because in RussiaChina and India programmers are thought first to walk and than to run. to use a metaphor.... and if-when you know the basics very well the rest is no problem. like with any job you do a good basic training-apprentice ship and after that you can write your own pay check.

@Blue_Oak @RF99 Oh I believe you don't watch that stuff.  I just said you sound like a person that does (an angry old man that's fed up with feminism.)  But I find it both sad and amusing that you connect women's studies to the quality of engineering education in US universities.  When I got my degree in the 90s that stuff wasn't new on campus and I don't remember it having any affect on my CS classes.  What did?  I had crappy professors because their jobs pay pittance as compared to private sector where the good ones could make bank in a start-up.
There may be a lot of reasons we don't have the best programmers.  Heck the US doesn't have the best of a lot of things except doctors and lawyers.  But safe zones and women's studies?  That's a stretch.
