JERUSALEM — News of eight Chinese tourists spending more than $4000 at a well-known Israeli hummus restaurant grabbed headlines last week. On Sunday the Israeli Foreign Ministry launched a search for the group in an attempt to figure out why the tourists were charged so much.
Such hummus restaurants in Israel are generally known for their hearty food and good value. Last week however tour operators cried foul after a group of eight Chinese tourists notched up a bill of 16500 shekels or $4390 after an evening at the Abu Ghosh eatery in the small Israeli-Arab village of the same name.
What did they consume to merit such a scandalous tab?
Restaurant owner Jawdat Ibrahim said the charges were fair listing bottles of expensive alcohol and an entire lamb among the items ordered. He also said that the group asked for a private room which meant closing down part of the famous establishment on a busy Friday night.
Yossi Fattal chief executive of the Incoming Tour Operators Association however accused Ibrahim of putting one over on the visitors. He said he publicized the bill as a way of shaming those who try to cheat unsuspecting tourists.
Now Israel’s Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Embassy in China are attempting to track down the eight tourists to find out what happened. Were they unhappy with the cost? Did they feel they were ripped off?
About 47000 Chinese visit Israel each year and one of the goals of the Tourism Ministry is to further promote the image of Israel in China. Earlier this year China’s Hainan Airlines started direct flights three times a week between Beijing and Tel Aviv.
Amid the furor over the food bill it's up to the Israeli Foreign Ministry to do some damage control: to track down in China the eight people who visited Israel and find out what really happened at the restaurant that night.

Who is questioning this? This is not an outrageous tab. A quarter of the pre-tip cost is simply the cost of blocking out a private room (which is independent of the size of the party) and more than half the remainder is for alcohol. The math then comes out to $200 a head for a really strong meal. $50 gets you a 8oz fillet in DC and these gentlemen came away with 8 pounds of lamb and all the hummus you can eat (not to mention appetizers and desserts). This totally makes sense and it beggars reason why the "tourism industry" would want to throw shade on one of the few reasons to visit Israel.

If and If it's true then I really feel bad about the restaurant owner once the Israeli IRS gets a wind of that. I can assure you that his average income will be based on that entry (If that entry was not recorded..waooo forget about it) There is one thing both Jews and Arabs in Israel know; and that is not to mess with and that is their IRS (or as they call it MAS).

If they willingly added 10% gratuity on top of the $400 service charge already worked into the bill I don't see how they could complain of being cheated. Ordering top shelf liquor at $400 a bottle obviously can add up quickly....Like old Chinese proverb says: "Don't sweat the petty things pet the sweaty things!"
Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

cococo: "how big do lambs get". A typical "leg of lamb" (i.e. probably leg of mutton) bought in a Michigan supermarket weighs around 5-6 lbs including the bones and the outer layer of fat. At 66 lbs my guess (only a "housewife's guess" you understand) is that it would be a very grown-up lamb; in the US the lamb you buy is usually mutton. In Israel I don't know.

If the reporting is accurate this looks like some people trying to live large and a restaurant obliging. They asked for an entire lamb assumption is that it is not because they wanted to eat an entire lamb but rather it is impressive to see an entire cooked lamb. They asked for a private room. The alcohol choice was also expensive. It appears to be a case of them treating themselves.
On a side note another thing to consider is that Israeli restaurant prices are about 16% higher than in the US.
