KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — New Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Monday that a planned high-speed railway that would cut travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to just 90 minutes will be axed because it isn't beneficial.

Mahathir said the 350-kilometer (218-mile) rail project slated to be completed by 2026 is too costly.

"It is a final decision, but it will take time because we have an agreement with Singapore," Mahathir said. "It is not beneficial. It is going to cost a huge sum of money. We will make no money at all from this operation."

The two countries signed an agreement in December 2016 to build the rapid rail line with speeds of over 300 kilometers an hour and dubbed a "game-changer" that will boost connectivity and strengthen economic ties between the neighbors. Currently, it takes at least four hours to travel by car.

It's 350 kilometers, so a normal train going 120 should do it in three hours. Just upgrade the existing track.

Can't they get regular rail down to 3 hours, and more punctual? That would satisfy most people.

So this would enable people to travel to Singapore faster and spend their money there instead of Malaysia, plus the huge cost that the Malaysians would have to pay to get it. Singapore is the only beneficiary on this debt laden mistake.

A high-speed railway is a massive transit conveniently and speedy connection to other countries and even it may be a future efficient link to all parts of the world apart from the costly means by air. Malaysia axes this high-speed to Singapore is not a wise move. Malaysia will be far behind in progress in the near future than countries well equipped with a high-speed railway.

I wish the politicians in the US would make the same kind of decision when it comes to high speed rail or any rail which runs at higher speeds through cities and towns. Not one in the world has paid for itself and it isn't equitable or financially prudent to spend tax dollars on these boondoggles. Improve the roads and let self driving electric autos take care of the problem. Most rail road advocates fail to include the time and cost of traveling to the station and than traveling from the station to the final destination. Plus the parking costs at the stations.
