Singles’ Day: Chinese to splurge $20bn in world's biggest shopping event
Chineseconsumers were expected to spend $20bn in the Singles’ Day shopping splurgethat claims to be the world’s biggest shopping event.
In lessthan seven minutes after midnight on Friday, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibabasaid 10bn yuan (US$1.47bn) of products had already been sold through itsplatforms as consumers indulged the now annual celebration of the country’slonely hearts.
Threeyears ago it took Alibaba six hours to reach that number. Less than halfwayinto the day this year, sales surpassed last year’s total, the company said onits blog.
Analystsexpect $20bn in sales, smashing 2015’s record haul of $14.4bn, in a day thathas eclipsed both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the two biggest shopping daysin the US.
Foreignbrands such as Apple, Nike, New Balance, Adidas and Ugg dominated the topsellers, with only a couple of Chinese brands making the cut, mainly mobilephones and home appliances, the company said.
“A lot of the rhetoric coming out of the US recently on China is whatthe country was 10 or 15 years ago,” said Duncan Clark, founder of investmentadvisory firm BDA China and author of Alibaba: The The House That Jack MaBuilt. “Protectionism will only hurt the US, because Chinese consumers arevacuuming up American products.”
Themajority of that money goes to the brands and sellers, with Alibaba makingprofit on a small commission and fees from advertising.
Thecompany flew in David and Victoria Beckham and Kobe Bryant to make appearancesand the band One Republic to perform at a televised gala in Shenzhen the hourscounting down to midnight. Katy Perry, a major Hillary Clinton supporter, wasscheduled to headline the event, but pulled out at the last moment due to a“family emergency”.
Last year,a bewildered-looking Daniel Craig, introduced as James Bond, was a galahighlight.
Theshopping day was supposedly started by university students in the 1990s,celebrating their bachelordom by buying themselves presents, while November 11– double eleven – was chosen for its collection of lonely ones.
WhenAlibaba launched the annual online sale on Singles’ Day 2009, just 27 merchantstook part, offering steep discounts for a 24-hour period.
But theheadline sales figures touted by the company – used by investors to gauge thehealth of the company and wider Chinese consumer sector – have come underscrutiny recently.
The USSecurities and Exchange Commission is looking into the unaudited Singles’ Daynumbers and figures for its logistics network, the company said in May, causingits stock to plunge 7%.
The dayis a welcome sign to the country’s leaders, who are working to transform theeconomy to consumer-oriented from one dominated by state-owned industries andfactories.
But whileSingles’ Day is a public relations dream, the numbers hide a broader slowdownin the Chinese economy and the limits of one day determining the health of acompany.
“Singles’ Day is an asteroid on the calendar now, in a sense it’s toobig to fail,” Clark said. “Alibaba can’t be seen to have lower numbers – forthe company but also for China’s macro-economic picture – and there’s a lot apressure to perform, so they need to get off that treadmill.”
Alibabahas been expanding into financial products, insurance and entertainment inrecent years and future growth will come from those areas, Clark said, giventhe limitations of e-commerce. The company is also working to increase thue of products sold.
The sheersize of Singles’ Day has led to discontent among Chinese shoppers with a hostof complaints over not being able to buy what they want and long wait times toreceive merchandise.
“I don’t like Singles’ Day because I’m not able to buy the things Iwant,” Yang Qian, a 28-year-old lawyer at a state-own company in Beijing, said.“I put a shampoo in the shopping cart a few days ago, but when I went to payfor it at midnight, it was already sold out.”
But thereis something of a herd mentality when it comes to Singles’ Day.
“I don’t like Singles’ Day, goods are not much cheaper and the deliveryis so slow,” said Zhao Ying, 27 bank employee in northeast China. Despite thecomplaints, Zhao was still caught up in the collective frenzy and spent 1,000yuan on household items to “join the fun”.
Formerchants though, Alibaba has delivered on its promise of riches, at least inthe short-term.
WeiXiuyuan, a 26-year-old lingerie merchant, loves Singles’ Day watching orderafter order come in on her computer.
“We can sell more products on that day, the sales volume is triple thannormal,” Wei said. “We can make more money and customers are happy as wellbecause the price is half of what it is usually.”
