David Cameron and Xi Jinping to talkbusiness on day two of state visit

David Cameron’s charm offensive towardsChina’s president, XiJinping, will intensify on Wednesday when he will offer cheap visas forChinese tourists and welcome billions of pounds in business deals with Beijing, including in nuclear power.

The second day of Xi’s state visit will betaken up with trade summits and a bilateral meeting in Downing Street, with thetwo countries heralding £30bn of new business deals between them.

The biggest of these is likely to be aninvestment by China’s state nuclear power companies in two new plants beingbuilt by the French firm EDF at Hinkley Point in Somerset, rumoured to be worthin the region of £8bn per plant.

If these investments are such good valuefor China, why doesn't the government just borrow the money (which it can atvery low interest rates), and make the investments itself?

Gammeron - selling England by the pound atthe cost of many to benefit the few. Fucking deplorable Self servative scumbag.

I think the most telling part of theNuclear deal is that we as a rich educated nation of maybe 70 million people donot have the where withal to build are own nuclear plant . The dumbing don ofthe British has been happening un noticed for decades then the government ofthe day will tell us we need to import qualified people to the UK because wedon't have the skills here . What ever happened to training and investment inBritish collages and universities . Or do people really think the british arejust to thick and want to spend their lives on the dole ?

Obviously the concept of building our ownreactors, employing our own people and using our own steel for the job, withmost of the money going back into our own economy as a result isn't apossibility that occurred to the Tories.

We don't have a British designed nuclearpower plants, why is that? Another legacy from Thatcher is the answer!

So if I have understood correctly France isbuilding the nuclear plant hopefully with Chinese money in Uk and all theGovernment has to do is to provide a cup of tea for everyone served by theQueen! Awesome!

How the tables are turned. Britain got itsoverblown status in the world due to colonialisation and exploitation offoreign lands. Sometimes with the collusion of governments but the generalpopulace had no power to stop it. Familiar?
Two quotes: Santayana wrote (in The Life ofReason, 1905): “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
And Churchill: “When the situation wasmanageable it was neglected, and now that it is thoroughly out of hand we applytoo late the remedies which then might have effected a cure. There is nothingnew in the story. It is as old as the sibylline books. It falls into that long, dismal catalogue of the fruitlessness of experience and the confirmed unteachabilityof mankind. Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simpleand effective, lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until the emergencycomes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong–these are the featureswhich constitute the endless repetition of history.” —House of Commons, 2 May1935,

"Cameron will unveil a new visa regimegiving Chinese tourists cheaper access for multiple visits than travellers fromother countries". Its would also be good idea to scrap the veryspeculative fee for a visa application for the Chinese wife or husband to jointtheir UK citizens love one in the UK.

I'm surprised they allowed Phil the Greekto attend, what with his track record of commenting on the Chinese.

The time will come when the only option forthe people of this country is to get the pitchforks out of their sheds and towalk towards Westminster.

Isn't it time the China and Chinese bashingcame to an end, it seems to me that is sour grapes, why do so many people buy, wear, use and eat chinese products if they hate the place so much

freeethinker  ID240947 12m ago
Well frankly, the reason is that the UKhardly makes anything since Thatcher and successive governments all butdestroyed our own industry and UK and American industrialists then just abouteveryone else moved their production to the Pearl River region in China.

Smilingmoose  ID240947 11m ago
We don't hate the place or the people justthe people who run the country.

Because they're cheap and that's all the UKis interested in.
Show me a phone that isn't built in Chinathat is competitive
