So most of my shirts have been ruined by the washing machines here. The colors are faded and they look like raggedy old shit now. I’ve only had them for about a year and wash them 1-2 times a week. It seems the washing machines here damage your clothes a lot faster than in the West.
Anyone else notice? Is it the water or shitty laundry detergent or what?

but its also the water. the water and probably knock off chemical detergents will eat away at the fibers.

I've experienced this as well. Idk about your machine but ours is freaking vicious even on gentle cycle so I chalk it up to the strength rather than the water or detergent. Those could definitely factor in too though.

Yeah. Top loaders are especially bad for this. My new apartment has a front loader and everything improved dramatically.
Also I can finally wash them in healthy hot water.

Only basing this on my experiences but I swear that top-loader washing machines screw your clothes up more than machines with a door on the front.

The agitator in cheap top loaders (the spindle) tends to wrap your clothes up more and damages them. I remember how when I had a top loader in Guangzhou everything would be tangled up to the extent that you had to practically untie things. It really depends on the quality of the machine though. The machine I have at home never does this. Man I miss having a drier!

It has a long tube vent attached to the back of it and I just stick it out my balcony window. Drier is on my balcony.

I know driers are awful as far as energy use but god damn I hate it when my clothes take hours to dry on the rack. It's also been hella humid around here and my clothes have a kind of "sour" smell after drying.

Also our washer in China also beat the life out of our clothes.
Which was annoying since decent clothes cost so much there.

Fucking hell I knew it. My apartment came with a top loader washing machine (which has no temperature options I may add) so naturally I didn't get a new one because I didn't know and figured it's fine. Fast forward 6 months of putting laundry once in 10 days because I'm a lazy piece of shit and so many of my clothes are completely fucked. There's definitely something off with these machines

Put most things that aren't underwear in zip mesh laundry bags especially button shirts. You can buy them pretty widely. It's not ideal but it prevents the worst of the damage from top-loaders.

Haha they told us this at uni so the advice was just buy cheap clothes and expect them to turn out crappy. Didn’t really bother me but at least I got to know in advance

I think most people here turn there clothes with graphics or writing on them inside out when washing them and for articles they think are very delicate they use washing bags to protect them. I never thought about it in the west but it’s quite common here. Maybe the washing machines are rougher but I’m not sure. I just thought they were more careful.

I have found that even the front loader machines tend to tangle and twist clothes more. Anyone know why washer-dryers are so uncommon in china even in higher end accommodation? Is it just because people are so used to ayi doing it? In a time-conscious culture like China you'd imagine a washer-dryer would be very appealing to the market.

How u dry them? Not using a dryer right? And the fading is more about the detergents loosing and tearing on the other hand is more about the machines.

Top loaders in China are quite violent. That's due to many detergents in China are just useless white powder or perfume gentle machine = cannot gets the soul off = bad machine. Clothes *ucker = powerful motor = advance technology = high-end machine.

It's the old machines that spin way too fast and are too rough. Top-loaders are worse for your clothes because they don't have gravity working for them and they must spin faster and rougher to get the same cleaning effect as a front-loader.
Nothing to do with water or detergent.

This wouldn't surprise me... You may have different results depending in your city and/or compound but I had dry skin problems from the shower which would probably indicate chlorine which I think is fairly well known as an additive. Chlorine is not a friendly chemical to anything really and has a mild bleach effect on colours. So there's that. Perhaps there's a way to counteract it or you could always add a filter to the washing machine tap. Not sure what the result would be but might be worth a shot.

Yes I have experienced the same over years. Some of it because of horrible water and I think the lack of a central agitator actually allows the clothes to become more entangled and stretches out my shirts quickly.

The problem is the water. Even if you buy a good western style washing machine the water quality is bad and it impacts your clothes wearing down faster.

Best use I've ever seen from these top-loading 1950's Yorkshire-pitminer's house washing machines in China was at a party where some American lad just dropped his bluetooth speaker in the drum.
He then switched on his synth-pop playlist on his phone turned up the base and went back to his baijiu and coke.

Are you using a top loader? There is a reason why those top loaders cost only a couple 100 yuan.
Just get a decent front loader for less than 2000RMB and this will solve your problem. Haier front loaders are not the best but get the job done.

No local laundry detergent does not contain enzymes because of "enzyme giver cancer" craze. Because of they simply make it more concentrated to compensate.

Yes I noticed that as well when I was in China I think that's because I used a machind that loads from the top and that revolves around a vertical axis.
