What are some things you would gladly pay more for in China?

I would pay 15,000 rmb to be able to have a number and card that works exactly as a Chinese ID card in every way other than having anything to do with my citizenship.
Any time some app or website only has a spot for 身份证, picking up train tickets at the machines (or swiping at the gate), using alipay outside of China, doing anything with telecom companies, etc. I would pay even more if it was good for life.

When I lived in Japan, they issued you an ID for foreigners.
I liked it because it did just about everything their IDs did and I could leave my passport at home where it belongs.

Most countries with relatively large foreign populations do. The Party just doesn't want life here to be convenient for foreigners.

To be fair, they do want it, they're just struggling to achieve it. The new FWP is the first stage in the process (though it's not 100% clear why they had to do it in stages and couldn't make it useful already).

You're talking about a one party state that often boasts about being able to get things done with extreme efficiency and speed (unlike slow, inefficient democratic countries). If the government here really wanted to issue us with ID cards, they could do so easily. Literally all we need is a cheap, plastic card and an ID number. The system for granting work permits is already in place.
The government seems to make announcements every few years that things are going to get simplified/cheaper/quicker/more convenient etc, but all that has happened since I've been here is things have gotten more complicated, time consuming and expensive for everybody involved. The FWP (you mean foreign worker's permit, right?) does absolutely nothing to make life more convenient for people working here.

The FWDs expire. The Chinese IDs don’t. If they are treated equally, they need a way to expire IDs in general but they don’t have such a thing

The number doesn't change though, it's just the card itself that expires

The Chinese IDs don’t.
They literally state on the back how long they're valid for.

It’s almost as if the Chinese government considers foreigners to be somehow “less than” Han Chinese.

It's almost as if the Chinese government considers only Han to be Chinese.

I want this as well, such a pain in the ass without the ID, and now I think the government is cracking down more on bank accounts; seems like they want to kick out foreigners more and more

proper toilet plumbing. I hate those stinking shit-paper buckets....
also the ID card someone mentioned would be great, as well as internet and.....

Cheese, Motherfucking cheese
I looked for fucking cheese for so long when I lived in Harbin. Only cheese I ever found was on cheese burgers at Lotteria. They sucked but I ate the shit out of them because they had shitty imitation cheese.

[–]onlysubbedhere
I'm surprised you couldn't find it, we used to come from Daqing to Harbin to pick up tens of pounds of cheese from Metro.. That and hash.

Plumbing and potable tap water

Unfettered and unmonitored internet access. Actually anywhere, I'd pay more for this.

Websites in English. Also an apartment in an area of town where mopeds are banned and the ban is strictly enforced.

I just want websites that look like they weren't built in 2004.

ctrip does this and the prices in the english website are higher than than the Chinese website

[–]xiefeilaga
If you look closely, a lot of the prices listed on the Chinese side are for Chinese only (listed as 内宾). Those deals are always cheaper.

I just booked a flight on Ctrip Chinese because I wanted to pay with Wechat and you can't do that on the English website. It was indeed about 200 kuai lower.

My previous apartment complex banned electric bikes from parking (also ofos and mobike were not allowed in). That really did make a difference
