(CNN)The 10-minuteconversation between US President-elect Donald Trump and Taiwan President TsaiIng-wen was a major break in the accepted protocol -- something that evidentlydoes not much bother Mr. Trump. It is, of course, too soon to guess whether itwas a fluke or a portent of a sea change in American policy.

美国当选总统川普和台湾领导人蔡英文的十分钟通话是对“一中”政策的重大改变，这显然对川普来说不算什么。当然，现在也不能过早猜测这是否仅是一个偶然事件或者是美国政策翻天覆地变化的前兆。

When theCommunists won power on the mainland in 1949 their defeated Nationalist foesretreated to the island of Taiwan, either to go down in a last stand or to"recover the mainland." The Communists, for their part, determined to"liberate Taiwan."

T·G在1949年击败国民党赢得大陆政权后，国民党败退到台湾。国民党只能偏安一隅或者反攻大陆。而T·G，他们决定解放台湾。

Both sidesconsidered the standoff to be part of a continued civil war. Both claimedlegitimate rule over all of China, with Taiwan merely a province of China. Theone thing both agreed on was that Taiwan was inextricably part of China, andwas not and could not be an independent country.

Until the late1980s the Nationalists ruled Taiwan as a police state. Danger of communistsubversion served to rationalize the dictatorship, although in practice therepression was directed at least as much against agitation for Taiwan independence.

The Nationalistsremain in principle open to eventual unification, but not with the crowdcurrently running Beijing. The actual China policy of the two differs only atthe margin: The Nationalists will not actively push for unification and theDPP, given the credible threat of an invasion by the mainland, will notactively push for independence.

国民党虽然原则仍上遵从终极统一，但是并不是同现在的北京政权。现在台湾两党的中国政策边缘不同点在于：国民党不会积极的推动统一，而民进党在考虑到大陆动武的情况下，也不会积极的推动独立。

In the meantime, as the generationspass, fewer and fewer on the island think of themselves as "Chinese,"but identify as "Taiwanese." The island is Chinese in ethnicity andculture, but this need not imply it is properly subject to any Chinese state.

Hence the breachof protocol. To add to the offense, Mr. Trump in his tweet called Ms. Tsai thePresident of Taiwan, a term anathema to Beijing (more acceptable are"leader of the Taiwan authorities" or "so-called 'President' ofthe so-called 'Republic of China'").

在违背一中政策的后，更有甚者就是川普在推特中称呼蔡英文为“台湾总统”，这更是北京所不准许的。（更容易被接受的称呼是台湾地区领导人，或者是中华民国总统。）

Alas, there are dangers. The currentChinese leadership is certainly not inclined to take military action againstTaiwan, as long as Taiwan does not make any explicit moves toward formalindependence. But if Taiwan should, China's leaders have talked themselves intoa corner: it will be politically impossible for them not to act.

虽然危机重重，但目前只要台湾不采取实质的独立行动，中国是不倾向于采取武力反制台湾。但是如果台湾这么做，中国领导人是不可能不采取反制行动的。

If a Trumpadministration directly or tacitly encourages President Tsai to push her luck,China may feel compelled to attack. This itself would be tragic, and sinceTaiwan cannot defend itself without American support, America would be faced withthe choice of ignominious abandonment of a friend it had encouraged or abloody, possibly losing war with China.

如果川普团队直接或是默认鼓励蔡英文冒险的话，中国将会被迫采取反制行为。这将会是一场悲剧，因为没有美国帮助的话，台湾根本无法自卫。美国面临的下场将是，要么无耻的抛弃被自己鼓动盟友，要么有可能在血腥的战争中败给中国。

Back in the day,critics caricatured the old American policy as "pretending" Taiwanwas China and that the mainland "did not exist." This was notaccurate, but it was also not without point. It is in principle and logic asfatuous now to pretend that Taiwan as an independent entity does not exist. Wecan only hope that everyone involved will act carefully.

@Everybodygodeep Extremely different.  He dealt with the actualgovernment of the nation, not the mayor of Havana.  Regardless if you likeraul castro he is the recognized and accepted leader of cuba.  Themayor/governor of taiwan is not the legal representative of china no matterwhat she claims.  It is not that hard to see and understand the difference.

This is smart, obviously the previous 8 yearsof letting China and Russia push us around did not stop them from becoming moreand more ambitious.  This act should give China pause.
