The public transportation is MUCH better in China. Whereas China has bullet trains going all over the country, the US is struggling to put something in California. Recently, my friend posted on Facebook something that I found very funny:
2169 km from Beijing to Shenzhen
- 10.5 hours by train (down from 30 hours in 2005)
- 28 hours by car
1069 km from Portland to Sunnyvale
- 10.5 hours by car
- 23 hours by Amtrak, including a layover in the Oakland maintenance yard.

中国的公共交通更好。中国有通往全国各地的子弹头列车。美国还在因为加利福尼亚的某些事撕逼。最近，看见我朋友贴在脸书上的东西，我觉得很好笑：

There are GHOST cities in China! Being in the most populous country in the world, you'd think there is not enough space for anything. Reality is that there are ghost towns (completely build, but abandoned). There are many reasons for this, but the overbuilding in China has caused a lot of the real estate to not be being occupied.

中国鬼城（又来了o(╯□╰)o）这个世界上人口最多的国家，你以为做点啥事都会空间紧张。但事实是存在鬼城（完全建好了弃用的）。这里面有很多因素，但是中国确实存在大量房产建好空置的现象。


 
Some Chinese LOVE to flaunt their wealth. The rich kids in China, actually love to flaunt their wealth. This has caused social media to explode against these people: burning money, dogs wearing two Apple watches, postings of the amount of money in their bank accounts... these kids have done it.

一些中国人喜欢炫富。这些中国富人的孩子，十分喜欢炫富。这在社会媒体上引起了大众反感：烧钱，装备俩苹果的狗，晒银行账户余额……是这些孩子们常玩的（好像你们家没这种脑残似的）


 
China does things big. This does not only go to government, but also private events. Most recently, a couple of China (an actor and a model) married and spent the small sum of >$30 million US dollars. Meanwhile, you have me, a poor scientist who has no idea if I will even be ever to make that kind of money in a LIFETIME!

中国爱整大项目。不仅是政府，个体也一样。最近，一对中国人（演员和模特）结个婚花了3000万美金。同时，你我这种的穷科学家简直不敢想，一辈子是否能赚到这么多钱。

Although I have not taken an official trip to China, I got a transit visa there for one day when I had an unplanned long layover at the airport at Guangzhou on my way back to the US from India. I was surprised that the airline accommodated me at a hotel (thanks to China Southern Airlines for their generosity). I had twelve hours free to explore, so I left the hotel and walked around for a while. I came upon a big food market. To my surprise, there were all kinds of live animals being sold for food, including crabs, snakes, lizards, spiders, turtles, and a variety of sea creatures (some I didn’t even recognize).

虽然我没拿到中国的旅行签证，但有过境签，某次我从印度回美国，在广州机场转机我有足够的时间逗留。让我惊喜的是航空公司给我订了宾馆（十分感谢中南航的慷慨大方）。我有12个小时的时间可以到处浪一下，于是我就去了。走了一阵，遇上个大食品市场，出售的各种活得食材琳琅满目，看得我眼花缭乱。有螃蟹、蛇、蜥蜴、蜘蛛、海龟和各种各样的海洋生物（一些我甚至都不认识）。

I also saw a small kid eating a fried turkey foot (I think … see below).

As a vegetarian, this was a totally different kind of food than I was used to, and was a totally new experience for me. When I got back home, I had to look it up and found that these are all actually common foods in southern China.
Hopefully I get to go back to China someday and explore more!

作为一个素食者，这不同于以往我吃的食物，对我来说是个很新鲜的事情。等我回家之后，又忍不住拿出来看了好几眼最后我发现原来这是华南地区常见的食品。希望哪天我还能到中国更多的地方去浪一浪。

Three (actually four) things shocked me the most:
The Smell.
Oh my god, The Smell. When you see pictures of the (admittedly) interesting markets and food stalls, you can’t imagine the pungently strong smell you feel. It’s not a stench, mind you, and after a few days you really get used to it. The food is still delicious, but the smell stays with you for years. I can feel it right now just by thinking about it. Humph.
The Driving.
Of course there’s bad driving all around the world (Italy comes to mind, my own country El Salvador) but in China walking was something of a madness experiment and a survival challenge. Big buses almost running you over, people scrambling to cross the street, small motorbikes zigzagging around and gliding past you at top speed. It was scary, it was intense.
The Trains:
Someone walks by mopping the floor while you’re riding the train. Also: there are some hot water faucets where people prepare their soups and noodles (?).
The Looks:
Oh, the looks I got. Talking about train stations, I was waiting for my train from Beijing to Datong and a group of kids started pointing at me and laughing and touching their faces to mimic a beard. They started taking pictures of me and they came up to me to ask me where I was from and wanting to take pictures WITH me. It was weird, disconcerting but actually kind of funny.

三个（实际是4个）方面让我受精了。
气味
额滴个神啊，那味道。当你看图片的时候它当然只是个有趣的市场和小吃摊，你感受不到那种强烈的嗅觉痛苦。不是那种恶臭，别介意，不久你就会习惯了。食物很美味，但那种味道会伴随你几年挥之不去。现在我光想想都能闻到，娘哎。
开车
当然全球各地都有危险驾驶（意大利也一样，我家在萨尔瓦多），但中国走得是疯狂司机路线和生死存亡风格。大客车与你擦边而过，过马路争先恐后，摩托车蜿蜒曲折以高速滑过你身旁。太可怕了，吓死宝宝了。
火车
当你坐火车时，有人边走边拖地板。还有不少人从水龙头接热水端着他们的汤和面条来来回回。
见闻
哦，这个要说说火车站，我在等从北京去大同的火车，一群娃儿指指点点对我傻笑，他们摸着脸假装他们像我一样有胡子。然后他们开始拍照，还走过来问我我是哪里人，能否一起合影。这太奇怪了令人尴尬，但其实还是挺好玩哒。

Interesting that I came across this question as I just landed back in Delhi after 15 days in southern China.
Infrastructure: Best i’ve seen. Most of it is better than U.S. The reason for this is everything is brand new. The metro is extremely well connected to every part in the city.
Women: Because I went for work I interacted with a lot of entrepreneurs and business owners and to my surprise, almost half of them were girls or older ladies.
Openness: I found their society very open. I don't know if it was just for business, but in general I found it very easy to talk to them.
Food: The food I had there was completely different to the Chinese food I’ve been having all this while in India and China.
China has a lot to offer and I loved their country. I will go back and explore more in future for sure.

有趣，刚好在我从中国南方呆了半个月回到德里后遇到这个问题。
基础设施：是我见过最好的。大部分都比美国好的多，因为他们都是全新的。最棒的一点就是地铁连接的城市四通八达。
女性：因为工作原因我经常会接触到企业家和商户，令我惊讶的是他们当中的一半人是姑娘和上年纪的女性。
开放度:我发现这个社会很开放包容，不知道是不是因为生意的缘故，但通常我们交流起来很容易。
食物：当我在印度和中国的时候，吃得中餐和这里的中国食物完全不一样。（咖喱味英语，这句咋看咋别扭）
中国（对世界）有很多贡献我喜欢这个国家。将来我肯定会再回去多逛逛的。

Their trains & buses: People in China doesn't seem to mind long-distant travel where they need to sleep in a train crammed with humans. Sleeping/travelling overnight on trains and buses alone seem to be something experienced by many, even for Chinese females!
They cut queue: Perhaps something that annoys me the most
Illegal transportation (taxi & bus): Not something that happen only in China but was amazed how well they coordinated their operation with each others.
They smoke even inside restaurant despite non-smoking sign
If you befriended with Chinese, they can be one of the most generous people you ever met. I once visited one of my Chinese friend at 石家庄 (Shi-Jia-Zhuang) and they ordered every single local dish available! Although, I was already full but they insisted me on trying them, even if I just take a bite.
The number con-artists at famous tourist attraction and how oddly familiar they way of them tricking people is similar those found in Europe. Is as if they have a "International Tourist Trap Organization" and standardized their practices.
Their hygiene: Their public transport that travels from city to city & trains are very dirty (unless you take their express train which is quite clean). Cigarettes butt can be found everywhere on the buses and even behind the seat's pocket!
Life is hard but they are enjoying it. Life is seriously hard there, I can't even imagine myself being born in China and sincerely respect how they actually live there. And because of this, their ties and friendship between people are strong. I think the reason behind is because they know, if one day they accidentally screw up in life, you might be the one saving them and likewise, they know you'll do the same. Despite living in such a harsh environment, they are really happy. You can tell by the look of their face while roaming a random park in the city.

他们的火车和巴士：在中国没人会介意长途旅行，他们都需要睡在挤满人的车上。在火车和巴士上过夜的长途对他们来说是常事儿，即使是中国的女性。
他们总是插队：这是让我最恼火的事情
非法运输（黑的士和黑巴士）：这种事情全球各地都有不只在中国，只是好奇他们是如何处理自己的本职工作和这事的
就算有禁止吸烟的标志，他们还是会在餐厅里吸烟
如果你有个中国朋友，他们一定是你见过最慷慨的人。我曾经去石家庄看望一个朋友，他们几乎把当地特色菜全点了一遍给我吃。尽管我已经吃饱了，他们还是希望我能尝一尝，哪怕只吃一口。
着名的旅游景点总是存在很多骗子。他们的行骗手法如此熟悉，你很容易在欧洲找到。因为他们都是“专骗国际游客”行骗手法都是标准化的。
他们的卫生：他们的城市对城市的公交系统中厕所都是非常脏的，除非你乘坐的是快车（这个倒是非常干净。）巴士里到处可见烟屁股，甚至是座位上的放杂物的口袋里都是。
生活是艰难的，但他们享受它。生活真的非常艰难，我甚至无法想象自己要是出生在中国该怎么办，真心佩服实际生活在那里的人们。正因为如此，他们之间人与人的关系非常重要。我认为背后的重点在于，他们很清楚一件事情，一旦你哪天在生活中遇到麻烦了他们可以拯救，同样的他们知道你也会为了他们这样做。尽管生活在这样一个恶劣的环境里，他们仍然很开心。在路上随便一个公园走走你就能遇上这样一张脸。（这傻货说自己是汉族，但不是中国人，猜猜产地在哪？果然橘生南则为枳，穷山恶水出刁民，出生地风水一定不好，不然怎么长成一只傻货了，同情一下）

1、Transport
Well-developed transportation in China.
The high speed development of both bullet train and highroad is faster for people to reach any place in China
2、Generous Chinese people
Most of Chinese are shabby-genteel, if some Chinese invite you for meal that means you don't need to pay, there is never "AA" this kind of thoughts in their mind.They prefer to ordering much dish beyond your stomach.
3、Pay with mobile
You will not totaly image you can complete going shopping/eating/calling a taxi and doing anything without your purse in China.Paying with mobile is quite popular  and it is really well-developed.

运输
在中国有着极为发达的运输系统，子弹头列车和高速路的发展使得人们在中国任何地方的出行都很便捷
大方的中国人
中国人都死要面子，如果他们请你吃饭你不用掏钱，他们没有AA制的概念，糖厂吃饭会点很多菜远远超过你们的胃容量
移动支付
你完全想象不到在中国你不带钱包也能完成购物、订餐、打车这类事情。用爪机支付就可以了，相当便捷。

Biggest culture shock? The sex trade.
After my first retirement, no youngster I, I decided to take a ‘gap summer’ and travel. Leaving my wife behind, I went from the US to New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, and finally China. China was, to say the least, well out of my comfort zone. The other countries had plenty of English speakers and English customs. China was an entirely new experience. I speak no Chinese. I was anxious as I arrived, wide eyed and intimidated. I paid (idiot) for a taxi to the Hilton(?) in downtown Shanghai, such a swanky place that the desk staff are in suits (I would never go to a place that expensive in the states). I checked into my room, gathered my courage, a western man alone and unafraid, and walked out into the city. I kid you not, in less than 30 seconds I was accosted by a guy. “Hey man, Asian lady massage! Hand job, blow job! Sex, 300 RMB! You come with me now!” (300 RMB is around $50)
I’m not naïve, I’ve been in rough places, but what an odd welcome to China. I finally shook him off, only to be accosted again. This time by a young woman, who latched onto my arm. “Asian lady massage! Hand job, blow job! Sex, 300 RMB! You come with me now!” I finally shook her off, only to be accosted again. And again. And again And again. Un. Be. Leivable. I regret, now, not having filmed an encounter. Basically I couldn’t go 50 feet without getting the routine.
Mostly, the ‘accosters’ were women, young college girls. I was shocked and amused at their directness. I would walk the Bund in Shanghai with a huge, embarrassed grin as girl after girl accosted me. I wasn’t rude, I thought it was funny and I would talk to them about it. I would tell them I was married, they would say plenty of men are married but have Chinese girlfriends.
One of my favorite exchanges: “We have many pretty girls for you! Eight-tee, Nine-tee years old!” Um, thanks but no…no interest in bangin’ grangma. I explained to her that in English the ‘N’ at the end is really important. She laughed when she figured out what she had been offering.
It finally came time for me to leave Shanghai (wonderful place, btw). I was on an early flight out, so I left the hotel at dawn to walk to the subway. The city was quiet and peaceful, hardly a soul out. I walked past a young woman slowly walking arm in arm with her old, decrepit grandmother. I say “Nee-how.” She says, quietly, “Asian lady massage…Hand job, blow job…Sex, 300 RMB!” Really? At 6 am?
The shocking thing? There is no pornography in China. None. And yet you can apparently get sex for 300 RMB.

最大的文化冲击？滚床单服务
在我第一次退休的时候，还没孩子，我决定给自己放个暑假去旅行。我独自上路没带老婆，我从美国出发一路游过新西兰，澳大利亚，新加坡，最后到了中国。最后一站的中国，超过了我以往的认知。之前的国家大都讲英语或者有英语国家的习惯。中国是个新体验，我不会讲中文。当我到达的时候我焦虑不安，吓得眼睛都瞪大了两圈儿。我在上海市中心打车去了希尔顿酒店（蠢死了）（O(∩_∩)O哈哈~上海市中心到希尔顿酒店路程6分钟）这样一个豪华的地方前台人员都穿着西装（那种昂贵到在美国我永远都不会购买的西装）。我，一个孤单的西方男人，鼓足了勇气走进了我的房间，然后无所畏惧的走进这座城市里散步。不骗你，出门不到30秒就被一个男人搭讪了。（我去好污，怎么翻啊，那啥为了避免翻译君被查水表，大家领会意思哈）“海，帅哥，亚洲女式按摩，手动，口技，深入内部服务，只要300软妹币。跟我走吧。”（当时300软妹币差不多50美刀）
我可不傻，我去过更糟的地方，但是刚到中国就碰上这样的欢迎实在太奇怪了。我最终摆脱了他，但是又一次被搭讪了。这次是个年轻姑娘，直接挽上了我手臂。同样的台词儿，我费了点劲甩开她，结果一路走来不断被搭讪。真是不敢相信，现在我有点后悔当时没有把这段遭遇拍下来，基本上走出的五十英尺一直被这样搭讪。
最重要的来搭讪者多是女性，还有年轻的女大学生。我很震惊但也被她们的直率逗乐。我在上海外滩散步带着巨大的尴尬的微笑应付着一个接一个想勾引我的姑娘们。我不想表现的太粗鲁，我觉得这挺有趣我还和她们聊天，告诉他们我有老婆的，她们会说很多男人都结婚了，但都有中国女朋友。
我觉得最有趣的的一段对话是。“我们有很多漂亮姑娘，80岁，90岁的都有！”“呃，谢了，对于和奶奶级别的女士做深入了解不感性趣”。我向她解释了在英语数字中，N结尾的单词发准音很重要。她明白了之后笑了起来。
终于到了启程离开上海的时候（顺便说一句，很奇妙的一个地方）。我是早间航班，所以在黎明我就离开酒店步行去地铁站。这时的城市宁静而平静，几乎没有啥人。我路过一个姑娘，她扶着她的老祖母在慢慢的散步。我打招呼“泥壕”，她压低声音“亚洲女式按摩……手动，口技……深入内部服务，只要300软妹币。”
什么鬼？！早上6点？
我完全震精了。在中国没有色情文学。一点都没有，然而你却可以花300软妹币获得全套滚床单服务。
