In an ongoing series, NK News poses areader’s question to a defector. This week, enduring military service on anempty stomach

In North Korea, men serve in the militaryfor 10 years and women for seven. The special unit working as Kim Jong-un’spersonal bodyguards serve for 13.

在朝鲜，男人要服役10年，女人服役7年。金正恩的贴身保镖任期13年。

Military service is compulsory in the DPRKand most people enlist after high school. Those who are accepted intouniversities do their military service after they graduate.

朝鲜的兵役是强制性的，大部分人高中毕业后就入伍了，大学生毕业后入伍。

Usually if you have a bachelor’s degreeservice lasts for five years, but if you studied engineering or science youserve three because the former leader Kim Jong-il wanted to encourage people tostudy science.

通常，如果你有本科学历，服役5年，但是如果你学习的是工程学或者科学，你只需要服役3年。因为前任领导人金正日想要鼓励人们学习科学。

The main difficulty conscripts must endureis constant hunger. Soldiers in the special units are well taken care of butthose stationed outside the capital Pyongyang are only given two or threepotatoes a meal, or are fed solely on raw corn kernels or corn rice.

应征者要面对的主要困难是持续的饥饿。特殊单位的待遇很好，但是那些驻扎在首都平壤以外的士兵每顿就只有2或3个土豆，或者只有原始的玉米粒或者玉米稻谷。

Thanks to these diets, North Koreansoldiers are said to be several inches shorter than their South Koreancounterparts – a sensitive subject for the North, wrote Adam Cathcart, as tensionsflared on the peninsula last month.

由于这些饮食，朝鲜士兵据说比韩国士兵矮小几英寸——一个朝鲜的敏感话题，Adam Cathcart写道，因为朝鲜半岛上个月爆发的紧张局势。

On meagre rations the soldiers not onlyhave to train but are given physical tasks such as helping farmers on theirrice paddy fields. Many become very thin and hungry, and desperate to escape.

The military police are always on the lookout for soldiers who’ve escaped to look for food. Sometimes these soldierssteal from civilians and farming stockrooms because they’re so hungry. If it’sedible, they’ll steal it.

军事警察总是在寻找已经逃出去寻找食物的士兵。有时这些士兵从平民和农村仓库偷东西，他们是如此的饥饿，只要能吃的东西，他们就会偷走。

I’ve heard that some senior officers willeven order soldiers to go out and steal. If they fail they may be punished.

In my high school class there were 25 boys.Five went to college and the remaining 20 went into the military. Half of thosewere returned home suffering from the effects of malnutrition.

Soldiers are given home leave to recover.Most are too weak to even walk by themselves, so their parents pick them up andfeed them back to health. When they improve they go back to the army.

The lucky ones serve in the special unit,or serve under good officers who take care of them. The unlucky ones die ofhunger before their parents have a chance to help them. The only thing theseparents pray for is the safe return of their sons.

North Korea may be the worst place in theworld to do military service.

Judging by his photographs, the 'DearLeader' ( a.k.a. Fatty) didn't spend much time in the army.
