STD rates hit record high in U.S. as screening clinics close

Drug-resistant gonorrhea is on the increase. It causes severe reproductive complications and disproportionately affects sexual, racial and ethnic minorities. (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases)

Infections from three sexually transmitted diseases have hit another record high, federal health officials reported.

More than 1.5 million cases of chlamydia were reported last year, up 6 percent from the year before. About 400,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported, a nearly 13 percent increase from 2014. The biggest increase, 19 percent, occurred in syphilis cases, with nearly 24,000 reported, according to the annual report on STDs released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

All three diseases are curable with antibiotics, but gonorrhea is growing increasingly resistant to treatment with antibiotics.

CDC officials said STD rates are rising at a time when many of the country’s systems for preventing those infections have eroded. In recent years, more than half of state and local STD programs have had their budgets cut, resulting in more than 20 health department STD clinics closing in one year alone, the CDC said. In 2014, the number of chlamydia cases also rose to record levels.

“We have reached a decisive moment for the nation,” said Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention.

Americans ages 15 to 24 account for half of the estimated 20 million new STDs in the United States each year. Numbers and rates of reported cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea continue to be highest among those ages 15 to 24. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Most STD cases continue to go undiagnosed and untreated, putting people at risk for severe and often irreversible health consequences, the CDC said. The economic burden to the U.S. health-care system is nearly $16 billion a year, according to the CDC.

Young people and gay and bisexual men face the greatest risk of infection, and there continues to be a troubling increase in syphilis among newborns, who are infected by their mothers.

The 2015 data, the latest available, show:

• Americans age 15 to 24 accounted for nearly two-thirds of chlamydia diagnoses and half of gonorrhea diagnoses.

• Men who have sex with men accounted for the majority of new gonorrhea cases and the most contagious forms of syphilis.

• Women’s rate of syphilis diagnosis increased by more than 27 percent from 2014 to 2015.

• Congenital syphilis, which occurs when the infection is transmitted from a pregnant woman to her baby, increased by 6 percent.

Officials urged health-care providers to make STD screening a standard part of medical care, especially in pregnant women. Individuals need to get tested regularly and reduce risk by using condoms.

STD testing is another service provided by Planned Parenthood. Many of the same states that failed to expand medicare through the Affordable Care Act have, because of rising deficits in their budgets, also slashed funding for STD testing. Blame stupid fiscal policies and mis-ordered priorities of those states and their representatives in Congress, not Obama.

You mean the reality like directing money from facilities which provide sexual education and affordable STI screening? Or decades of opposing comprehensive sexual education? You might want to take a look at which states have seen the highest rates of STIs.

If we want to reduce instead of increase STD's and HIV, we need to not closed Planned Parenthood sites, teach in all schools prevention, make condoms readily available, not cut state and city budgets in these areas, not let insurances not provide birth control information, make morning after pills be hard to get and called abortion.  More education and condom use will bring down the abortion rate.  This is just another area we have become a third world country. Maybe we need help from the Clinton Foundation.

       10/22/2016 8:09 PM GMT+0800
I agree with both of your responses.
The younger generation thinks it's cool to have sex, especially unprotected, like it enhances their Swag-Factor.
Upstate New York is heavily inundated with new STI cases.
I'm an Pediatric Nurse, the amount of Gon. & Clap. cases are sad, especially when I see it identified by the Neonatal to 18 year old category.
These children aren't receiving the education they need as it pertains to abstinence and/or protected sex.  The alarm really sounds when you see the SAME children               coming back for repeat treatment and/or new STI treatment.  I try to tell these kids HIV isn't an joke.
I hope the "It doesn't feel good with a condom" FAD dies off quickly!
I also try to educate them on checking for identifying factors, which would tell them if their potential partner is infected with something.
My question is, "Are they listening and implementing  medical advice?"

At some risk of being called a religious fanatic, the core problem (as I see it) is the collapse of the Judeo-Christian mores that guided our social structure since its founding.  Yes, there has always been mail-to-male sexual behavior and, yes, there has always been sexual congress outside marriage.  Such behavior was, broadly, tacitly understood as unacceptable (please don't accuse me of gay-bashing).  In today's age, everything's OK, beginning at a very early age.  The rise in STDs sure reflects that, at least in some measure.  I don't have any answers--certainly none that would be broadly accepted--but I do remember the words of my commanding officer: "Flies spread disease. Keep yours zipped."  Worked for me.

(注:Flies spread disease. Keep yours zipped.

Health problems, oh sigh..  And STD's are oh so stealthy, we thought we had syphilis kicked, it's often subclinical as many western diseases are, the spirochete is rather elusive, and dare I call it highly intelligent, with more DNA than any other known pathogen.   Access to doctors should be more of a humanitarian effort, and an educational one at that, doctors without borders comes to mind.

This, along with increased rates of maternal and neonatal deaths are the direct result of the anti-abortion movement. By cutting funding to public health and Planned Parenthood, education and testing and treatment of vulnerable populations have gone by the wayside and the results are clear in the rise of STD's, maternal mortality and neonatal morbidity. I hold the right wing republicans directly responsible.

Primary reason for recent increase in US maternal deaths (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/867225#vp_3 )  :  "The researchers determined that deaths from all violent causes, including motor vehicle accidents, homicide, suicide, and substance abuse, occurred at a rate of about 15 per 100,000 live births, substantially higher than deaths associated with the four leading pregnancy-related causes of maternal mortality (hemorrhage, embolic disease, hypertensive disease, and sepsis), which occurred at a rate of about 4.5 per 100,000 live births.

condoms provide good protection from HIV transmission, but not so much with other sexually transmitted infections (they're STIs, not STDs anymore).  many can be transmitted through oral sex or merely through physical contact.  it's best get tested regularly.

Yes, because sex didn't exist outside of marriage before the 1960s. There's a reason youth pregnancies and abortions are at an all-time low. STI rates are on the rise this year, after years of being down, and the rise is most notable in places where clinics were shut down.

humanracepepsquad

Except sex absolutely did exist outside of marriage before the 1960's!  (People then were no different than we are now.  To believe we are smarter than previous generations is a dangerous sort of arrogance.)  The difference between then and now is that sex outside of marriage happened as an exception rather than as the rule.    The Sexual Revolution caused a seismic shift in attitudes that was only possible because of the pill.  The pill separates out the biological purpose of sex from the act of sex and gives the illusive promise of "consequence-free sex."  But as experience demonstrates, there is no such thing as consequence-free sex.
The Sexual Revolution caused the following:
--skyrocketing of out-of-wedlock sex
--dramatic increase in teen pregnancy and out-of-wedlock births
--exponential increased in abortion (59 million and counting since 1973)
--increase in the incidence of breast cancer (carcinogenic effect of the pill on the one hand, plus the hormone-cycle disruption to changing breast tissue during pregnancy caused by abortion)
--increase in divorce
--increase in violence against woman on college campuses and elsewhere
--creation of a world market for human trafficking and exploitation of woman and minors because of a porn industry that takes in more money than the GDP of many countries.
--and it caused our current STD/STI epidemic.
Instructing children how to use condoms (even it were to happen daily from K-12, even if it were the only thing  taught in our schools) gives children and young people a false sense of security and makes well-meaning people (like you) feel better.  Such condom-use instruction fuels millions of dollars of funding to organizations that don't wish to see their funding ever dry up.  But condom use instruction, plus back-up testing, plus "back-up abortions" are a band aid solution to a much, much larger and graver problem.
Our very humanity is at stake, and sorry to say, condoms won't solve the problem.

jay2drummer
10/26/2016 6:42 AM GMT+0800
No, the difference between then and now is people actually get tested, we actually can test for STIs, and people aren't afraid of getting tested. Which is why you see these rates go up in areas where clinics have been shut down, and why other indicators (like unplanned teen pregnancies) are way down.
