Being Chinese-American I can tell you some of the many remarks that have annoyed me throughout my life:

1、"Hey you're Chinese. Do this math problem for me."
2、"You got an 800 on your SAT math test right? It's probably because Chinese people are just naturally good at math."
3、"I would hate to have a tiger mom like yours." (Note: Person never met my mom who's actually really nice)
4、"I probably drive better than you."
5、"Isn't Jackie Chan your role model or something?"
6、"Don't you support communism?"
7、"If I go to China they will immediately arrest me and throw me into a communist prison. It's why I will never visit China."

9、"I'm only going to eat the skin off of the dumplings."
10、"Aren't Taiwanese and Chinese people the same?" (Seriously don't say this one.)
11、Me: "Can you take your shoes off before you walk around my house?"
Person: "No I think I'll keep them on."
12、"Haha your dick is small! It's like I have a regular iPod and you have an iPod Nano." (This guy was a total idiot.)
13、"You should tell your people to stop copying American products. Why don't you guys try making something original?"
14、"Let Jesse calculate the tip. He's Chinese."
15、"So how many of your friends are sweatshop workers?"
16、Saying anything in a heavy fake and pathetic Chinese accent.

And etcetera. Usually if it's a one time thing and it's in good humor I tend to forgive and forget especially if it's my close friends. But I've long broken the friendships with people who consistently make fun of me because of my ancestral/cultural background. I don't need friends like that.

If someone said 8 or 9 around me I'd kick their ass. Although I will admit to calling Cantonese food Chinese food on occasion.

I remember an interesting episode re China / Taiwan. I was with a European company signing an agreement in mainland China. The agreement was valid in (according to the Chinese text) "China including Taiwan Hong Kong and Macao". The European representative an elderly gentleman had to spell it in English for a reason I don't remember now. He inadvertently dropped the word "including".

They were not happy.

The same thing happens to me all the time.
People also say I’m a good swimmer because I’m white and I’m a good basketball player because I’m black.

It would be interesting to know where you live what type of work you do or where you encountered these comments.   Somehow you have encountered way more than your share of racist ignorant jerks.   These comments seem like they were deliberately intended to insult; there is some racism against Chinese these days but in most circles the average person won't even think of saying this stuff even if they believed some of it.

I have an Asian wife and have been married 26 years.  My teenage triplets are obviously mixed.   I can count on my fingers the number of times there were blatantly racist comments like yours.   Almost all were from young children(around 6th grade) directed at my kids.

Completely a guess but this really feels to me like the kind of thing young college students/young adult males would do when hanging out with their buds.  Kind of in fun kind of malicious but intentionally pulling out (false) stereotypes just to show how clever they are and to get a reaction.   Probably not believing 95% of it themselves.

AMEN!  I worked in China for 4 years. People should realize that cultural stereotypes may have a grain of truth (Lord knows many Chinese and other Asian students are keeping US SAT scores higher in math!) BUT they are stereotypes and don't apply to ALL individuals in a nation of 1.3 (or is it now 1.4?) billion people. (The food comment baffles me since Chinese-American food is one of our 'top' foreign food choices.) Even among my Uni students in China there was significant diversity. And some of these students were terrible at math!

Now this is not a problem just for Americans talking about Chinese though. In parts of Asia everyone expects Americans to be blond all American women to take off their clothes and f**k nearly on the streets and eat hamburgers every minute of the day.  That's just for starters - I could go on. (We all have guns too!)

Well the people in Taiwan and China ARE both Chinese.  I don't quite get this one.  They're different provinces but then China has different provinces itself.  The first thing any Chinese asks another is 'where are you from?' meaning 'what province?'  There are many mainland Chinese who fled to Taiwan when Mao took over.  Do you think they're Taiwanese or Chinese?  When I lived in Taiwan everyone thought they were Chinese.  Wo men shr Jung Guo ren (we are Chinese) they all said to me or I am Chinese--wo shr jung guo ren.  I mean--are people from all the other provinces now supposed to say 'I am xxxxxx.' instead of I am Chinese.  My husband is from Manchuria--but he is NOT Manchurian so he is not going to say that instead of saying he's Chinese.  They can say I am FROM such and such place--but Chinese ARE Chinese.  So I just don't get this one.  I would think--just say I'm from Taiwan or I'm from China.  You can't erase DNA through politics.  I agree with Taiwan about wanting to remain independent from China though but genetically they ARE Chinese!

you forgot to include questions about people asking about dog or cat cuisine. And also gambling. I have heard non Chinese people ask Chinese and Chinese Americans what is their strategy for choosing lottery tickets like Powerball.

I'm sorry people are so crappy. The friends you have forgiven for making racist comments are very lucky for your patience. Thank you for sharing with all of us about your experiences. It all seems so obvious... why do you think people think it's ok to say these things? Thanks for speaking out!

"Why does Chinese food taste like shit?"  Is probably a valid question for a westerner to ask about authentic Chinese cuisine.  Hopefully they would use more tact than that but the palette differences are pronounced and texture is valued far more in Chinese cooking.

Love this answer  and having been in China totally get you.
But I think the moral of the story is not using non existent stereotypes for any country.  Be it Chinese...ahem mathematicians  Brits liking The Queen  or Colombians and drugs (that last one really gets me started and could be a whole new question).

I didn't realize the stupidity and ignorance of people towards Chinese. I studied Asian Studies in college so I guess I have an advantage regarding the rich culture and gifts the Chinese people have given to the West.

I have a Chinese wife and I warned her with all the stupid American thinking about the Chinese. There is this stupid notion that a chinese female has her sexual organ at a 90 degree angle. I warned her she may hear that rediculous comment at some point. However being in America and there is so many cultural jokes about (I have a Cuban mom) I do  joke around and when people ask me "is she chinese".. I reply " under her foot it says MADE IN CHINA'.

This just goes to prove the ignorance and self-centred approach many white American people have towards people of other background and descent. I know too many instances of racism occurring in the USA and I'm really sorry that you get treated like this. Don't expect Donald Trump to improve internal ethnic relations either. I'm seeing a country in a lot of trouble in the next couple years either way.

Haha I'm Chinese-Canadian is when people don't believe me that I'm half Chinese until I start speaking Chinese to them.
Look I'm already self-conscious about it at the few times where all my Chinese relatives are in one place and speaking Chinese to each other do you really have to bring it up? What's worse is that my five year old cousin and three year old cousin are going to chinese immersion. Do you know how sad that is? XD
