The first time the anthem was played in a publicly televised event was in the opening ceremony of the 1964 Olympics. Back in the day journalists and onlookers often remarked about how it made them nervous that it reminded them of the Second World War. This was especially true because Japan neither had an official anthem or a flag back in the day. They were banned by the American occupiers until their official status was restored in the 1990s.
It’s been decades since the war and most people who remember it are too old or dead. So I don’t think it’s viewed in the same manner as it was back in the 1960s. But I get the sense that the vast majority of people still don’t care or even know the lyrics. Personally I have never been forced to sing the anthem in any situation myself nor have I learned to sing it at school. I didn’t even know the melody until I looked it up on youtube after a friend asked a couple of years ago

This is in almost stark contrast to anyone that you meet from Europe who would know how to sing their own national anthem. It’s just not that important for the average Japanese.
Personally I actually think it’s a nice and simple melody based on the A Minor pentatonic scale very memorable and not at all ostentatious like most of the other national anthems like the Star Spangled Banner or La Marseillaise. I still haven’t got a clue how the words go though.

This is interesting. I used to live in Japan 20 years ago and I'm here at the moment and I was quite surprised to see this week the number of competitors in the Olympics who are actually singing the anthem compared to back in the day when literally no-one I spoke to knew the words.

It’s becoming increasingly acceptable to show your patriotism in public definitely. Part of that is the government that we have now.

It is an ancient poem about the Emperor and their family how their reign will watch over Japan for ages to come “until water turns to stone and is covered with moss”.
People are proud of the poem itself but most of the people I know (read all the people I know) do not care much about it as an anthem. Especially after hearing other countries anthems.
On the bright side it is short and easy to remember on the downside it is slowpaced while high pitched so it is rather difficult to sing.
I personally like it but it does feel like it lacks Anthem-ness
