China says it will have a 250-mile per hour train system in place within three years. By comparison most U.S. trains travel at speeds well under 70 mph. It is an example of Chinese ingenuity the government's willingness to invest in infrastructure and its attempts to cut air pollution caused by transportation. However the plans come with some safety risks.

The new trains will be available in Belt and Road Initiative markets and will be able to reduce per passenger energy consumption by 10 percent compared with high-speed trains that can run 350 km/h. The CRRC will be the manufacturer and exporter according to Qiao.
China's worst high-speed rail disaster occurred in 2011. And since it was covered up for a time it is possible there have been others. A crash of two trains in Wenzhou killed 40 passengers.

@Dan: what a stupid liar you are. Western reporters when report Japanese bullet trains they never mention one of the biggest train accidents in the history of mankind happened in Amagasaki Japan. In that accident 54 people were killed and more than 400 injured. Looking back to the last 20 years there were numerous train accidents happened in Japan and the US than any other countries.
db cooper
@dog man... So just how are you going to lose a thousand people in a wreck? Only a head on crash at 300 kph (The fastest I have been on one is 303 kph) is going to make that happen since the trains do not carry so many passengers as this. You will say "There you go a head on wreck" except the trains traveling in different directions travel on different tracks unlike American plans for high speed rail where they share the tracks with trains going both directions AND with non-passenger trains. A derailment is possible of course but there are things in place to keep the trains on their elevated platforms. The accident mentioned in the this news story was where a train collided with another that had lost power and the cars were pushed past the safety barrier. While the west is still debating the causes of heat crash the Chinese have moved ahead with safety precautions to prevent that happening again. So could you explain how a thousand people can be killed in an accident with these things running?

According to what I have heard flying is the safest way to travel. My father has been flying for over 30 years for business and has only experience couple of very minor incidents. I feel totally safe when I get on a commercial airliner. Just think of how many airliners take off and land every day just in the United States. When was the last time you heard of a major airline disaster? We had September 11 which obviously was not an accident. Then we had the tragedy with American Airlines flight 587 over Queens which was an accident. However that's the last one that I have ever heard of. I am flying to Europe this summer and I will be totally safe. I have also read high-speed rail which I thought was really fun. This was in Sweden my native country and not in China.

In terms of frequency of high-speed operations that is by far more than any other country in the world and the largest scale of the high-speed railway system by far in the world China would have the safest high-speed system in the world.
