BEIJING (Reuters) - China's domestically developed AG600 the world's largest amphibious aircraft took its maiden flight ahead of schedule on Saturday from the southern city of Zhuhai according to the official Xinhua news agency.

北京(路透社)-据新华社报道，中国自主研发的世界最大水陆两栖飞机AG600，周六在南部城市珠海提前首飞。

The AG600 was designed to extinguish forest fires and carry out rescue missions at sea Xinhua said on Saturday adding that it could also "be used to monitor and protect the ocean."

AG600被设计用来执行森林灭火和海上救援任务，新华社周六指出，它同时也可以“监视和保卫海洋”。

The seaplane's maiden flight comes amid China's increasing assertiveness to its territorial claims in the disputed South China Sea where it is building airfields and deploying military equipment rattling nerves in the Asia-Pacific region and the United States.

这款水上飞机的首飞正值中国对其在南海争议地区的主权声张日益高涨，中国正在该地区建设机场并部署军事设施，挑动着亚太地区和美国的神经。

The AG600 (127' wing span x 121) is NOT the world largest amphibious plane the Spruce Goose (320' wing span x 318'). Guess the author of the article need a pair of toothpicks keeping the eyelids open when doing research.

To me its always interesting to see how a different county comes up with different designs. China most often cheats and secures designs from other countries. In Chengdu they are building the tail section of Boeing planes and the mid section of EU planes. Now they have their own passenger planes and its no surprise that they took the technology form the two planes.
