Almost got stuck on this mountain when I failed to make it back to the cable car station before closing time. I just had to see the Fairy Walking Bridge. Anyways, the lady at the counter told me to bugger off when I tried to buy a ticket. I didn't have enough cash to pay for any of the accomodations on the mountain, so there was I sitting on the bench eating my packaged hotdog, basically had that "this is my life now" situation. About 10 minutes elapsed, a huge group of local tourists in those typical big tour groups came rushing down and tried to buy tickets as well. They were basically protesting, which I happily joined. In the end, she sold us the tickets and ferried us down during their maintenance operations two hours later. Then I missed the bus back to my hostel in another town about 40km away (Tunxi) so I stayed in a "secret hotel bedroom" inside a local convenience store.
I miss China.

I had a similar experience with my girlfriend. We had planned to just walk down the mountain on our second day but we went to all the branching paths from beihai before heading down. We missed the cable car by 30 minutes and got to the bottom of the mountain at 10 or so when there were no busses. We called the number on the bus sign and a very generous man picked up and charged us the usual fee of 30 RMB (~$5). Needless to say we tipped him generously despite him turning down our tip twice.

I would've chosen to walk down the mountain like you did if it weren't so dark at that time, and yeah I was on my own so it was probably not the best idea.

I went there on April 1st this year and that was the first day Tian Du Feng was open. Of course I made my family go because who knows when we'll get another opportunity. By the time we made it to the top, we only had an hour and a half left to get back to the cable car area (we had already paid for the tickets). I thought we had plenty of time to turn around and go back but my parents insisted that the only way to go was down the entire fucking mountain.
Let me tell you about this fucking hike down though. It took us three and a half hours to get all the way down, but the first half of it is some of the steepest staircases you'll ever encounter. Not only that but some times they don't have railings so you really have to take your time. Many people were in the same predicament as us and you could hear friendships and families being torn apart because of how hard and long going down the mountain was, everyone was yelling, kids were crying, adults were crying, it was awful. Obviously for those that exercise intensely every day and backpack and hike a lot it probably ain't shit to them, but for the average person, it'll make you cry. It also sucked even more because you knew you HAD to go down. There was literally no other choice because by the time you wanted to quit you were already a fourth of the way down, and sure you could climb your ass all the way backup and stay at a hotel on the mountain but we already had a room at another hotel and it's hella expensive to stay up there.
Still, one of the best experiences I've ever had in my entire life and I regret none of it. I recommend everyone go and do it if they have the chance. There's nothing quite like China.

Just curious, how did you manage to find the "secret hotel bedroom"?

So I was looking for a place to sleep, and being a cheapass/frugal backpacker, I wasn't ready to settle with the 100 yuan room everyone else was offering. So I walked into a local supermarket and bought a Pepsi, chatted up with the cashier/owner and asked her if she knows any cheap rooms around. She called up few of her friends, and most of them won't accept a tourist with a foreign passport (wtf right?). Yeah eventually some good lady took me in, even drove and pick me up back to her shop. I paid 50 yuan for a room with two queen size beds. It was awesome

Calling it "Mt. Huangshan" is kinda redundant since shan means mountain in Chinese. Still a great pic though.
