I can see how this was the inspiration for "Avatar." Zhangjiajie, China.

Initially I thought you were talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Air Temples.

I was thinking of the place Aang had his final fight with Firelord Ozai.

There you go,On foggy days everything will appear to be floating on top of clouds.

Always thought they filmed in New Zealand. This is beautiful though.

Three friends and I attempted to camp in this park about 10 years ago. It did not go well.
We were a group of American English teachers who had only been in China for a few weeks. We naively assumed Chinese national parks were similar to American ones and brought with us large packs full of tents and camping gear. However, when we arrived at the site, we noticed most of the other visitors were dressed in suits and dresses. Needless to say, we got a lot of confused looks. We soon discovered that "hiking" at Zhangjiajie involved ascending a manmade staircase and didn't see anyone veering off the stone path.
By the time we got to the top, the sun was going down and the tram had been closed. We knew we had comically miscalculated the situation, but we hadn't prepared a 'Plan B'. We were too tired and stubborn to start the journey back down the mountain, so we hopped a few feet off one of the stone paths and pitched our tents.
The next morning, I woke up and discovered that my three friends had wandered off to do yoga or some bullshit. I also discovered that four police officers had been standing outside of my tent and were less happy about our decision to 'rough it'. I gave them my papers and said the six Chinese phrases I knew at that point. It was a bit of a shit show. They searched our tents and grew increasingly hostile. Finally, one of my friends who was fluent in Chinese returned and was able to put the officers at ease. He explained that 'camping' was a recreational activity in the United States and acknowledged that we were essentially morons.
When we returned to our University, we each told our classes about our adventure and they howled with laughter. They insisted that no one in China chooses to spend the night in a tent and suggested that the cops probably thought we were incompetent drug runners.
I chalk that story up as one of the more embarrassing moments of my China experience. However, Zhangjiajie still ranks as maybe the most beautiful place I've ever been. I'm so glad we took that trip.

Avatar wasn't shot in China. They just rode the hype from the film to advertise their park. Landscapes were cgi.

3 hour drive from where I live. Worth it (I remember there being this part where you climb up a really tall mountain with only chains and wooden planks to keep you from falling). Just go there anytime soon, will not regret

Last time I went it was so crowded. For a place so far away from anything it was swarmed with tourists. Truly puts into perspective just how many people live in China.

Many of my Chinese friends talk about how the overhyped places are dirty or crowded now, so I'm not certain where to consider going.
Nyfunnetland
Some can be crowded, but I've never experienced a dirty place when going in the nature in China (I guess because cleaners are so cheap). There are plenty of mountains, lakes, tea plantations in Eastern China (Huangshan, Longjing village, West lake, etc.), but the really amazing things are in Southern (Guangxi - Guilin and surrounding caves and rice plantations are beautiful) and Western China. In particular Western China, with the mountains in Yunnan, Tibet, the Zhangye National Geopark in Gansu.
