I listen to a ton of podcasts and have been listening to Mike Duncan's massive 70+ hour History of Rome podcast for the past god knows how many weeks.

I've reached the point in which Commodus has been killed. For those who don't know much about him (i.e. people like the me of two days ago) Commodos was an emperor who among other things enjoyed entering gladiatorial games and hacking midgets and amputees to death with a sword believed he was the literal reincarnation of Hercules the son of Jupiter renamed all 12 months after his self-given 12-titled-name and even attempted to rename Rome after himself.

I don't know much about pre-Republic Chinese history but hearing about all of these stories of Roman emperors like Commodus Nero and Caligula has got me thinking about China's emperors.

Did crazy Chinese emperors exist? I'm not talking about ruthless murderous emperors but full-on batshit insane emperors.

For some reason I never hear anything about them but I assume they must have existed.

http://thehistoryofrome.typepad.com/ is a podcast by Mike Duncan who currently runs the very popular podcast revolutions (each season tells the story of a different revolution starting with the english civil wars). For the most part narrative history podcasters stick to one region/time period.

You should read up on Qin Shi Huang. He burned books and had academics buried alive. There are also stories about rivers of mercury in his unopened tomb in Xi'an. In truth an easy way to find a "bad" one is to take a look at any point where there was dynastic change according to Chinese though these emperors had lost the Mandate of Heaven due to their wicked acts.

你应该去了解下秦始皇。他曾经焚书坑儒，在他西安的陵墓里有水银灌注的河流。实际上在朝代更替的时期很容易找到一个"坏"皇帝，因为根据中国人的看法他们由于恶行从而失去了上天委任的权力(即失道)。

Qin Shi Huang: demanded his court follow him on a huge trip away from Xi'an in his fruitless quest for immortality. Dragged them all the way to Taishan in Shandong so that he could climb it and achieve immortality but it rained so hard that he couldn't reach the top. So next he drags the whole imperial court to the coast where he shoots a whale with a bow and arrow thinking that it is some sea god and now his quest for immortality is complete. Dies a few days later ironically from the bullshit TCM pills containing mercury that he thought would turn him immortal. His body is kept within the imperial carriage and his ministers stuff it full of rotting fish to disguise the smell of his decaying corpse because they are terrified what will happen when news gets out that His Imperial Majesty is dead.
Oh and let's not forget the lover of Qin Shi Huang's mother: Lao Ai. This guy apparently had the biggest cock in Chinese history. It was so big that respected historian Sima Qian later claimed that it could be used as an axle for a wooden carriage.
