A giant wave of plastic garbage could flood the U.S., a study says

It is time to roll the downstream disposal or recycling costs into all packaging, from paper to cardboard, to plastics, to glass, aluminum, and steel.

Maybe when the true cost of a liter of soda, a can of beer, or a FedEx package is recognized, we will begin to change how things are packaged and delivered.

"It is time to roll the downstream disposal or recycling costs into all packaging, from paper to cardboard, to plastics, to glass, aluminum, and steel."

YES.

Among other things, I'd think that metal recycling pretty much takes care of itself here, other stuff maybe not so much.

And there's no reason to be storing perishable food in non-biodegradable containers!

One suggestion: Try to avoid buying fresh fruits and vegetables that are packaged. Plenty of stuff is sold loose, and you also do NOT need to pull a plastic bag off the roll in the supermarket, to put it in. Most things can go loose into your reusable bag and just be washed off when you get home.

I agree. Like I can see bagging grapes so they don't fall all over the place. And romaine, b/c it's always wet. But an eggplant, a cucumber, 2 grapefruits, a head of broccoli? No need.

Bring back the returnable bottles we used to use.  I remember when it was cheaper to buy soda in returnable bottles than in disposable bottles or cans.  Also, make things that are repairable and built to last, not to be thrown away at the first malfunction because it is cheaper to buy a new one than to repair the old one.

These returnable ceramic yogurt cups and glass soda bottles never went away in China and Japan, they're still being used to this day, and their shape and size didn't change much since the '50s. They also separate their recyclables far better - no dirty diapers in recyclables. It makes being irresponsible look like a western thing.

But, but, but,  I can't teleport a glass bottle back to the store on my I-Phone.   WAAAAH.

We should outlaw bottled water.  That's a start.

You have to remember the main reason people buy bottled water - convenience. Put a water bottle filling station at every place that sells bottled water and make sure the attached existing water systems are not just to code, but will filter water good enough to deter people from buying bottled.

I would love nothing more than to never buy bottled water again and just use my trusty reusable bottle everywhere I go. But I can't. Not yet, anyway.

Incida mcandrew
I was in a college cafeteria the other day where they had a dedicated "water bottle filler station"
Easy. Not messy vs using a drinking foundation (or worse! the sink in the ladies' room).
(They even had a ticker on it showing how many commercial water bottles were "saved today" by refilling your own.)

Most users of bottled water could drink their tap water with no problem.

A bold move but one of many starting points.

When our local recycling center got the word of China not taking plastic any more they did some investigating.  Apparently part of China's problem was the idiocy and willful ignorance of people who couldn't or didn't want to understand the concept of what goes into the recycling bins.  People who used the recycle bins for trash.  Apparently one of the big concerns were the number of dirty diapers that came along with the plastics.  Sigh.

What a depressing finding. Clearly, the issue of plastic waste goes far beyond a straw in a turtle's nose. Consumers will need to start with their own choices. Compostable alternatives exist for many single-use plastic items; I use degradable trash bags. We will also no doubt need Federal action to put pressure on manufacturers.

Everyone should care about this issue.

Federal action?  Good luck with that.

I used to compost my veggies in a small section of my back yard. Now my town has composting that includes things like chicken bones. My kids in Brooklyn freeze theirs then throw it into NYC's weekly compost collection.

We could do this if we tried.

Gee, looks like we're going to have to figure out how to deal with all the waste we generate, like, taking responsibility for our actions.  The horror.

Time to start taxing the heck out of manufacturers that don't take measures to cut back on the volume plastic crap they produce.

like toxic waste, turn it back into some kind of petro chemical underground,
or something. Dinosaurs did it.

Why isn't Donald Trump reclaiming these Chinese jobs for unemployed American coal miners and other Deplorables that can't find work?

What the article missed was the reality that new markets will emerge.  Already two new plastic processing plants have been announced, one in Alabama and one in South Carolina, that will take plastic packages and processing them into to pellets which will be shipped to end markets in China.  The Chinese government has announced the pellets are not subject to the ban.  Yes we have an immediate market problem, but, long term probably not.

Garn53
Why not completely recycle it here? Why partially do it here and send it elsewhere for completion? That's more jobs and more $ staying here.

China's major complaint was contamination- which is caused by lazy recyclers who don't rinse and let dry bottles, put food-contaminated plastic, paper, and glass in the stream. Single stream recycling made things easy, and also resulted in massive contamination of recyclable products.

There is no solution and we can only minimize thru full recycle...How do you bring from store 1 gallon milk,or other liquid for consumption ???
