Thailand reported 8.77 million visits by Chinese tourists in 2016. The Thai government had originally expected the annual number of Chinese visitor arrivals to top 10 million but the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej last October put a damper on tourism. Nonetheless China has already become the biggest source of tourists for Thailand.

Thailand First Choice for Expansion

Alipay began its global foray in 2015 making Thailand its first stop due to the country’s proximity and its large number of visitors from China.

Isn't Alipay a bit of a pain in the dick to set up if you don't have a Chinese ID card? I remember having to send pictures of my passport and stuff but that was a few years ago.

Yeah I think it's the same with most of these Chinese techs. We'll keep hearing about them expanding out and conquering the world but that isn't reasonable given a handful of factors:
1.Onerous registration requirements for non-citizens
2.Chinese government data access
3.Lack of transparency regarding these issues and others

A lot easier now then. Unless I'm mixing it up with something else it took me a good three or so attempts to get my account set up and I had to wait a day or two between attempts.

What would anybody in other countries want to use alipay? There's already Visa paywave Mastercard paypass wechat pay apple pay Samsung pay.... I've only seen 'alipay accepted' signs in Thailand twice at touristy areas and the signs and writing were all in Chinese language so it's not very user friendly or needed for anybody who's not Chinese.

Apple and Android Pay should go for the Thai market heavily.
I for one don't want the Chinese government supported companies to have any kind of foothold anywhere else. Can't be trusted at all.
If there was a data breach they wouldn't even tell you. Both Alipay and Wechat Pay work on rooted Android phones. Google does everything it can to stop Android Pay working in these circumstances for security reasons.

Root is incredibly easy to hide so it doesn't really matter. Most people who actually use Google Pay have it setup to hide root when accessing certain apps.

I had this conversation with my Thai and Chinese friends. My Thai friends said Wechat Pay is used in Thailand but didn't specify how widespread. My Chinese friends who visited Thailand commented how they were surprised so many establishments used Wechat Pay.
I know it's not Alipay but if Wechat is makIng inroads I'm sure it won't be that difficult for Alipay to do the same.

Wechat pay is offered at 7-11 and a few other large chain stores and used exclusively by Chinese tourists and expats living in China. I've never met a Thai person who even uses wechat unless they have friends living there and use it because LINE and Facebook are blocked. Thai people don't use it not even sure if its possible with a Thai bank account. I signed up for wechat with my Thai phone number and the wallet function didnt even exist until i had a Chinese friend send me some cash. I cant get my account to lix with it or Alipay. Only my Chinese acvount will work

The convenience of alipay is really only because of its widespread adoption in China. The QR code system means that any small shop or street vendor can accept it for payment. It's entirely possible to go through the day in China without carrying cash or card.
Apple Pay and android pay use NFC which requires retailers to purchase compatible equipment. Since it isn't terribly popular (at least in the US) retailers aren't inclined to buy into the system. Since it isn't widely accepted it hasn't become popular. This cycle limits the convenience as a replacement for cash or cards.
