President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed frustration with China over its inability to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions suggesting his effort to strategically cultivate his Chinese counterpart was nearing its end amid Pyongyang's continued defiance.

Amplifying the president's displeasure Nikki Haley the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations insisted there would be no emergency session of the U.N. Security Council. In a statement posted on Twitter Sunday Haley said the time for continued multilateral discussions about the crisis was "over."

The U.S's pressure on China represent a stark departure from Trump's constructive tone toward the country as he sought cooperation on sensitive issues such as trade and foreign relations. The president has made overtures toward Chinese President Xi Jinping in order to convince him to exert influence over Pyongyang.

Trump's been highlighting China's trade issues when he talks about North Korea for awhile now. It would seem to me that his goal isn't North Korea. It's trade with China. He knows China won't budge on North Korea. America wouldn't gain anything from going to war with NK either. But "China" has probably been his most repeated word in his entire campaign. He even wrote a statement on the WSJ on declaring them a currency manipulator.

I believe the Trump team strategy with NK is to use it as an excuse to roll back some of the privileges bestowed on China through the WTO and decades of US free trade policy. Find one plausible issue where the core interests of the US are threatened by Chinese action or inaction and punish China unilaterally with protectionist measures. NK seems to be that issue.

Honestly I don't think it's that much different than how China uses the Great Firewall as a protectionist shield. It can claim it's doing it "for security" indefinitely but whether it's actually making China more secure it certainly protects and insulates Chinese tech from foreign competition.
So basically Trump is playing tit-for-tat and China knows because it's doing the same.

Trump forgets China doesn't want to be an enemy of north Korea. America may be in range of one middle but all of China is in range of every single north Korean middle and artillery shell. If China is Korea's enemy then China might be looking down the barrel of a gun

I don't particularly like the Chinese government but I have a ton of respect for the way they plan everything for five years a time in a methodical and strategical manner. From a global dominance perspective it seems like a much better strategy than electing people for a few years where they spend most of their time undoing the previous government's positions or campaigning for the next election cycle. And it's MUCH better than having a president who appears to be making ad-hoc policy via Twitter. 4D chess my ass.
