I'm not even talking about on the scale of Russia/China/DPRK. Even western liberal democracies like Spain Norway France (like on Bastille Day) Italy etc. have public military parades. But the U.S. doesn't. What in U.S. history could explain why this is so?

We do airshows and flyovers of football stadiums quite regularly. A 20th century parade if you will

Our military does their parades in other countries. We don't have to show off our military hardware when it's already showing itself off around the world.

The only parade I need to see is when it's on the news and of them in another country kicking ass. We don't do parades because we see just how effective they are in the news on TV and in the textbooks

Military parades in other countries are designed to be a show of force show off how powerful their land forces are. The strength of the U.S. military on the other hand lies in its naval power air power or hell why not both?
It is this naval/air backbone is what maintains Pax Americana and there are plenty of airshows flybys and ship formations during NATO exercises to satiate those who want to see American shows of force

This reminds me of stats that indicate the US Air Force being the largest in the world and the US Navy having the second largest air force.

You forget the Marines who are the world's third largest air force.

There's an old Army saying like that. It goes:
Who has the most powerful Army in the world? The US. Who has the second most powerful army? The III Corps commander at Fort Hood.

US Navy having the second largest air force
I think Navy is third after Army. Marines are fourth. Also with Coasties Merchant Marine and Army again we have several of the largest navies.

[dexed]
Other way around as I've heard it. The Navy is the biggest air force in the world

Edit: Eh. Apparently that's wrong though

This is true but our most effective show of force is actually one you might not expect. Every time there is a major natural disaster the US military shows up in force usually within 72 hours. Ever wonder why?
Does it give us civilians warm and fuzzies? Of course. Is it great PR? You bet. But the real audience is our adversaries who witness a ton of military hardware materializing somewhere it was not planning to be a few days before. The logistical flexibility demonstrated in response to real world disasters showcases how easy it is for the US to conduct rapid deployments at scale. If you are thinking doing something that might annoy the US you get the message loud and clear*.
*Assuming you don't have nukes. Otherwise all bets are off.

We don't have state sponsored military parades but we do have smaller versions. My Dad's National Guard unit had representatives march in our town's Memorial Day parades - but they were alongside floats and groups from civilians too like firetrucks cops school bands clubs etc. They wore their uniforms but it wasn't formal at all. They didn't march together and waved/threw candy. The unit even used their trucks to pull some floats.

It stems from since the Revolutionary War when we revolted against the Crown known for parading armies through major cities. The idea of military parades since then have been uncommon.

Nations like Russia China and even France have been doing it for centuries just something they always did.
