Africa’s past is the mildewed train station in central Addis Ababa where locomotives sit gutted and rusted tracks vanish in the grass. The line was once the greatest in Africa; built by France in the 1910s it ran more than 450 miles northeast to neighboring Djibouti where the desert meets the sea.

The new rail network was built by China’s state-owned rail and construction firms which were eager to promote their investment in Africa’s future. Red banners running down the towering facade of the new train station declare in bold Chinese characters “Long live Sino-African friendship.”

China has described its railroad adventures in Africa as an exercise in altruism.

Yet for China investing in Ethiopia — one of the world’s poorest countries — is more strategic than philanthropic. With U.S. engagement on the continent at a low ebb economically and politically China sees an opportunity to improve transportation through the Horn of Africa and make itself the dominant economic partner on a continent that is about to see an explosion of new cheap labor  and urban consumers.

Beijing invested heavily in hearts-and-minds projects such as soccer stadiums and hospitals. But a significant change is underway. China now sees Africa as an important economic opportunity. It has been pouring money into infrastructure across the continent and this week it opened its first overseas military base in Djibouti.

By 2034 Africa is expected to have 1.1 billion workers the world’s largest working-age population according to economic forecasts. By 2025 the continent’s consumers will be spending $2 trillion a year.

President Trump has barely mentioned Africa in his public statements and his “America first” rhetoric some Africa experts say is pushing the continent further into China’s embrace.

The USA should have been doing this all over the world. It doesn't necessarily have to be "transactional" as stated in this article. It could be done for the good of it...the quid pro quo comes in good will. This is what Christian missionaries do.....why they even build and run hospitals and schools. The idea is that it is a community of men or fellow humanity and this alone justifies helping those in need.

This is really China's way of trying to take over the world. They come across as altruistic but they want to colonize these third world countries. It's the same as wining and dining a poor mail order bride woman. You buy her little gifts (swap meet jewelry) take her out to eat (the 99 cent value menu at Jack N Box) and voila you get in bed with her. Then a couple years later she has a child with you. Now she's an anchor wife with your anchor baby. You're get fat old bald and ugly...and the story ends. That's what China is doing to these developing countries. They will be China's territories. The white Europeans of the centuries millennia ago did the same thing except they did it with violence (ask derek for the history lesson).

They had to send their workers from China to build anything in Africa Let China have them also the Africans need to go to China instead of Europe and America now that they are such good friendsand if China is ever going to be a super power they need to open their Borders which they will never do LOL they are real racsit

This article makes Ethiopians look as if they're helpless and cant do anything for themselves. The way you portray us Ethiopians is that where 100% Reliance on China to develop our country which is not true. They're massive undergoing of dam building road building that Ethiopians themselves are funding and building themselves. Yes we thank China for coming in and investing in our country and helping us but don't make it seem as if we're helpless and they're picking us off the floor. To the author don't makem inferior because Ethiopia has great culture and great history and yes we've been through difficult times during the Modern Age with war poor leadership and bad Land Management that began with the communism ideology during the dergue. In fact Ethiopia is one of the top five fastest growing GDPs and economic countries in the world yes we thank China for helping us grow but don't make it seem as if we're 100% Dependable on foreign powers and cant do anything for ourselves. Don't be naive journalist. Nice 360 Panorama though.

The dam building is actually displacing thousands of people who have lived there longer than Ethiopia or Abyssinia have existed and the government is treating those people with utter contempt and often violence. Nothing to be proud about.
