A Chinese state-run newspaper claimed Monday that the most recent collision of a U.S. Navy destroyer with a merchant ship was an example of the U.S.'s “arrogance” in conducting patrols in and around the South China Sea.

The nationalist Global Times ran an editorial Monday shortly after the USS John S. McCainwas hit by an oil tanker east of Singapore in the Strait of Malacca with 10 sailors reported missing.

It lacks respect for huge merchant ships and fails to take evasive action in time thus resulting in serious accidents.”

I happen to agree with China....I think it's very likely the ships' commanders are probably so arrogant that they feel like their U.S. navy ship has a right to its space and other ships should cede space to them as acknowledgement of U.S. superiority. We're often rather arrogant in our approach to world issues.

They are being kind. I would add stupid incompetant and a Hazard to Navigation in International Waters to that. I would have suggested that the US Navy stay in home waters before it does any more damage to international shipping.

IF America continues to pretend to dominate the world with its intrusive military then America should expect the predictable backlash from those who actually live in those regions. It's simply human nature. I'm all for a strong vigorous defense with mobile capabilities but our military is far beyond any rational "defensive" requirement. Republican hawks especially the neo-conservatives that made a huge blunder in Iraq has been more a Pax-Americana... a global influence and reach to push American interests upon others invited or not. We spend far too much money on military bases abroad and ultra-high-tech weapons of little or no use and all of them exceed their initial budgets. We end up selling weapons as well to those who may oppose us later. It's all rather insane.

Now the Asian people will make fun of white people that can't steer a ship in open sea away from a BIG giant tanker. It is not like the ships are going at freeway speed or even 35 mph like a car. There is no street signs speed limits and narrow lanes to stay in so what gives?

Two major accidents at sea in 2 short months? Both are similar hit broadside by merchant ships. Many deaths and heavy damages to both ships. Now not only the CO radar communication and officers on the bridge to be punished but it is time to look into complete command structure of the 7th fleet and hold the top brasses from commanding admiral accountable. There is no use of building 13 billion aircraft carriers like USS Ford.

I'am totally embarrassed about the obvious lack of professionalism demonstrated by the U.S. Navy ; being retired Navy ! These DD's /Frigates are sleek /fast and extremely maneuverable ! There is NO excuse for these recent collisions ! It ALL points to leadership (lack of) and proper training ! Some are advocating Hacking of our electronics ; B.S. We need to train our people to learn PROPER navigational skills (manual) ! Sophisticated electronics is fine with their "satellite" GPS and communications; however ALL of that can be taken away in a heartbeat ! Really makes you wonder if "all volunteer" military is sufficient; maybe we should consider going back to the "draft" 1. would teach these snowflakes the honor of serving the nation. 2. The nation would have a reserve force (after active duty) which could be reactivated in an emergency with minimal refresher training !

With all the advanced electronics why can't the USN avoid a slow moving cargo vessel or oil tanker? This makes absolutely no sense and yes the warship does NOT have the right of way it is the fault of the USN. Worse look at the USN response: We need more warships! And make sure they're Littoral fighting ships you know the ones that are expensive break down easily and cannot defend themselves.
