I discovered Bai Jiu (strong rice alcohol) infused with plants like Ginseng root and other items I did not know of. It tasted a little strange. As well as the high alcohol content it had sometimes earthy flavors. However I was told it had healthy properties even that it helped with virility. So I happily consumed this though in the crowded conditions in which I was staying in China I didn’t get to try out that particular property.

Though it isn’t exactly an “item” I also got to barter for items or goods. We just cannot do this in my country. It was very simple to do. I would look at an item note its qualities and price then decline to buy it when asked. Even if I was offered a lower price I would say “I will look around”. I would then go elsewhere and repeat the same actions. Eventually I would learn the bare minimum price I was offered and try my luck for an even lower price. Then I might be approached by someone in the street who asked me to accompany them to a private shop. There the prices might be even lower when I could show I have knowledge of the bargain price. This all took time but I had nothing better to do and not much to spend on everything I wanted. There were also vast sales involving entire warehouse sized precincts. It wasn’t difficult to get bargains that would be unheard of in my own country.

I also discovered “Red envelopes”. These were given by Chinese relatives to each of our children as part of the “Chinese New Year”. We often got envelopes for each of our three children with CNY1000 or HKD1000. This was like NZD200 and these immensely helped our finances during our trips.

There were many foods that were unusual. Especially from the “wet markets” which had live food items that would be shunned in my country. There were all sorts of shellfish as well as bugs and even things like worms. Also the dish of pig organ congee served in restaurants which was very tasty in a subtle but unusual way.

Altogether there are many strange or unknown items in China.

This drink is just disgusting incomparably nasty to taste - and I am comparing it with rough spirits word-wide. Nothing comes close for sheer unpleasantness. By all means get drunk but why make it so horrible? And you force foreigners to drink it too (I always think it is a joke and that my hosts have a different bottle and are laughing at me but even when I make sure the stuff comes from the same bottle it is just as nasty).

After 5 years in ChinaI still have no explanation for this.

After years in China I have come to appreciate baijiu!

Good baijiu has the tested ability to make an honest man out of anyone in vino veritas. With the remarkable no hangover after effects the following morning!

The taste of baijiu is not to be savored but it is dunk in as a quick neat shot through the back of the tongue. An aged less diluted and higher alcohol content is usually also a better drink. Much smoother and fragrant.

Ancedotal I've noticed that baijiu drunks are more mellow. Whereas beer and 洋酒 tend to make people more belligerent.

Mike well done. I have checked with my Chinese friends who also tell me that honestly they too genuinely like the stuff. But talk about acquired tastes…. (Vodka also avoid a hangover AND the Baijiu belch)

Yes. I try to go for vodka when baijiu is not available. Some Polish vodka are excellent.

It’s like preserved duck eggs 皮蛋 has a strong taste but it is enjoyable to some people. Depending on which 白酒 you are talking about a very good one will go down with certain Chinese cuisine very well. The smoothness of 五粮液,茅台 is incredible considering they are 52–53% ABV. I actually started drinking it in the US a few years ago and love the high end stuff.

The four treasures of calligraphy. I don’t mean they’re strange but getting hold of them outside China has proven challenging to put it mildly. Thankfully I got an ink stone(?) and ink-stick(?) from the University along with some paper but otherwise I got my best pencils from China.

Clothes dryers and dishwashers. Ovens also seem pretty rare. Also no icing. If you get a cake expect some form of cream and sliced fruit to be on top.

Century egg is delicious. Acupressure sandals are mildly uncomfortable yet perceived as good for your health. Open crotch pants are quite practical. Only in China convenience stores sell chicken feet as a snack same with duck livers & you can get alcohol 24 hours a day.
