SEPTEMBER 12 2017  NEW DELHI AND TOKYO—Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will lay the foundation stone for India's first bullet train in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state this week in a tightening of ties just days after New Delhi ended a dangerous military confrontation with China.

Mr. Modi has made the 311-mile-long high-speed rail lix between the financial hub of Mumbai and the industrial city of Ahmedabad in western Gujarat a centerpiece of his efforts to showcase India's ability to build cutting-edge infrastructure.   The leaders will launch the start of work on the line on Thursday India's railways ministry said in a statement.

"This technology will revolutionize and transform the transport sector" said Railways Minister Piyush Goyal welcoming the prospects for growth brought by Japan's high-speed shinkansen (bullet train) technology.

I wonder if it comes with training for staff and dress codes like in Japan and China? Will they be able to keep them clean inside at all times and the stations like in Japan and China? The daily maintenance safety checks and proper replacement of original parts is the most important things with these trains will Indian corruption and laziness from the top down be able to meet the level of decency & respect required by staff? We will see if they can get it done in 3 years or so as they predict...

India needs 160KmPH-level railway badly not the fashion bullet trains. Period. Also Japanese bullet trains are much more expensive than China's since China is building high-speed railways in such a scale that Japan has no way to match. The scale makes things at much lower cost.

West Bengal which provided India revenues much more than any state since 1947-1980 has been badly neglected. Gujrat was nowhere near Kolkata during this period in terms of development and revenue potential and no investment in Kolkata now and it is declining. Instead of spending such huge money for Gujrat and Mumbai other cities should be developed also so that they don't decline further.
