Shanghai, China

I went there in the 80s and that entire skyscraper district was a field of mud. My Chinese friend pointed at it and said it would look like Manhattan one day.

Could be a complete lie, but true or false haben an upvote for the imagery

"If you think NYC is big, you've never been to Shanghai."

Gallig3r
While I agree with your sentiment, this is an interesting statistic that explains why New York "feels" much larger than some other megalopolises that are objectively larger than it.

Cuttlefish88
It indeed feels larger because of the skyscrapers; not sure what the quotation marks imply.

NYC: 8 million people
Shanghai: 26 million people

jymhtysy
Shanghai has enormous city limits.
It still has a larger metro area (NYC: 20 million vs Shanghai: 34 million) but the magnitude of separation isn't that big.

cao-ni-ma
Well, the majority of the NYC 20 million live in detached suburban houses far away from Manhattan. The majority of Shanghai's metro population live in highrises. So while 'only' 50% larger, it is also far more urban and dense.

dreed18
NYC metro is closer to 24 million now

Sure, New York may be more famous. But does it have a building that looks like a weird ancient Arabic dildo? Or a slice of cake, next to a building that looks like city hall in Los Angeles, next to an empty toilet paper roll, next to a chewed drinking straw, next to an old electric shaver from the 90's?
I think not. New York has a few ugly pieces of shit for buildings but it can't compete with the entire skyline of Shanghai.

Wow this looks insane

Went there recently and it's an incredible massive city. Some of the best angles to see all those buildings in cyberpunky glory is the Bund.

Protophobic
How expensive are hotels there? NYC prices?

lllzh
It's surprisingly affordable and better conditions than NYC when I visited there two years ago. You can find 5-star hotels in downtown for around $100. (about $200 a night for area in the OP's photo)

Absolutely no more.. especially since the new Disney opened, cheap fares are very rare.
Actually I doubt how lucky you must be back then, seems unreal to me even 2 years ago.

lllzh
We usually booked our rooms via Expedia. I just checked prices for 5-star hotels, still the same price.
Some examples from search list:
Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre for $117 a night
Even on the Bund, it's only $199 (Banyan Tree Shanghai On The Bund).

how navigable is Shanghai for english-speakers?

bl1nds1ght
Went as a student with a 25 person group in 2011. We got rooms in what looked like a four or five star tower for probably that amount, too.

Best pic Iv'e seen of that city , I need to go

Do. It's awesome.

Man how do you even get a shot like that in a helicopter?

troflwaffle
You don't. Private helicopters are not allowed.

sreache
This photo is probably taken by a drone. I knew some Chinese billionaires have private helicopter, but they're not often seen.

TTVRaptor
I didn't know drones could get that high or be that stable, that's pretty amazing.

China knows how to city. I'm going back to Shenzhen in a couple of weeks.
The US is good at rural areas. If a city is what you want the US isn't worth it. Just go to China.
Someday I do hope that the US catches up and decides to be modern.

Europe is good at both!

If a city is what you want the US isn't worth it.
What?

nervyzombie
What do you mean exactly? The architecture? Then, I'd agree that Chinese cities generally to for może futuristic look, also the developments there are simply newer. But when it comes to living standards, American cities still come on top, despite all their flaws. Of course China is catching up rapidly.

asthasr
I would say European urban living standards are pretty damn good. Especially in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

joe9439
I’m a man of extremes. I want either a farm or nothing but 100 story buildings. Europe has too much 2 story quaintness in their cities for my tastes. Get out of here with your tiny buildings!

I hope nobody has to sleep near that district.

There are light pollution laws that mandate the lights go off at 9.30pm now. Used to be 10pm
