Shenzhen, China [2048x624]
lizongyang
This city is also China's silicon valley. Companies like Dji, tecent, huawei have their HQ at here.
cdsche11
Not sure why you got downvoted, that is an accurate statement.
bobogogo123
Only partially. It's not all-encompassing like Silicon Valley. Shenzhen is based largely on hardware and the software companies came afterwards. Beijing is still arguably the leader in this respect.

Rice paddies and metropolis, imagine the opposite view from one of those skyscrapers.

Coincidentally took a picture from that vantage point a few weeks ago. Not a sunset, but you get the idea:https://www.instagram.com/p/BWUORDEAn7w/

The rice paddies in the picture are actually in Hong Kong SAR.

This is the same type of thing you see in the SD-Tijuana border. Tijuana piling up right on the border where the SD side is just flat.

As an American I'm always fascinated by the pictures of China that show up in the SFWPorn subs. Maybe it's because growing up we're told China is just a backwards communist wasteland with nothing but smog and cheap knock-offs, but pictures like this show a country of huge metropolises and stunning natural beauty, none of which is ever talked about. Seeing it from this angle always makes me want to visit someday.

There's a lot of beauty. I spent a couple of weeks a few years back. I've only seen a glimpse and I long back there

The first step to escaping propaganda is noticing it.

The reason you see such a clear cut of city/natural wet lands is because this is taken right at the border between Hong Kong and Mainland China.
The Hong Kong side in the pic had been and still are "closed areas" that aren't open to most people and not developed, in fact part of area is zoned as a nature reserve

“Maybe it's because growing up we're told China is just a backwards communist wasteland with nothing but smog and cheap knock-offs”
A lot of this is also very new. China is just recently started reforming their market policies. Not sure how old you are, but growing up that could have been true.

The very crazy thing about this city in particular is it didn't exist 40 years ago. It is this massive city of nearly 12 million people that basically just appeared.
cheezturds
Yep. If you look up a list of China's tallest buildings a lot of them aren't even 20 years old.
notimetoulouse
Actually it's closer to 17 million now

China is absolutely full of smog and pollution. You're talking about mega cities that virtually sprouted up overnight.
Ok the other hand China is huge, land mass wise, almost as big as the US and just as diverse. China has rain forest, deserts, mountains-- it has it all like the US.
alexfrancisburchard
The smog goes for a looooong ways outside of the cities. That surprised me. You can drive or take a train for hours within smog. Also the high speed trains in China are the shit.

I lived in Shenzhen. It doesn't look like this.
This wetlands are out of the way and not accessible and only visible in very particular situations. Shenzhen is objectively a pretty ugly city.
notimetoulouse
I live there now. While it's true the wetlands are out of the way, the mountains can almost always be seen and the parks throughout the city are lovely.
LovableContrarian
Mountains are indeed nice, but the buildings/infrastructure are mostly old eastern European communist/brutalist architecture and poorly maintained, making most skylines an eyesore.
It's funny you mentions parks, because it's one of my least favorite parts of China. It's always just squares of grass, and the crowding/public attitude is horrible. Last time I went to a park in shenzhen an old lady stopped in front of me, squatted, and pissed all over the walking path.
Taiwan, by comparison, has amazing parks. Same Chinese style, but amazing water features, plants, etc. And the people respect the parks and treat them properly.
bobogogo123
Shenzhen isn't really China in terms of history and culture. It's the literal manifestation of capitalism on Chinese soil. You'll need to go to cities with a lot richer history to experience the "stereotypical" Chinese culture like Guangzhou nearby or Suzhou and its classical gardens.
jymhtysy
Yeah, Shenzhen itself doesn't look too great, especially when Hong Kong is next door. It's still booming though and basically sprouted out of nowhere within the span of my parents' lifetimes, so I personally find it impressive.
revengeneer
Shenzhen is absolutely stunning because it was basically nothing 40 years ago, and now it has over 1100 high-rises, over 10 million people, and most of the important tech in China.
