reddit网友:中国汉字的发音跟英语或是其他任意西方语言有所不同。因此要准确发音是很困难的,但是要让中国人能理解你在说什么并不难。毕竟有很多的中国南方人不会说标准的普通话,而是方言里掺着普通话。阅读的话基本上要求你熟记几千个单词并且明白它们组合起来的意思。我个人认为网站论坛有所帮助,因为那里有各种非常规使用中文的方式。写作的话是已注定的败局,我建议你还是放弃吧。

Somebody posted an article here once that sums it up pretty nicely. Can't seem to dig it up tho. It touched on: (1) lack of cognates (2) cultural disconnect (3) relative difficultly of Chinese coupled with prence of dialects (4) difficulty of looking words up (e.g. seeing an advertisement in passing and then looking the character up later) (5) difficulty of picking up a Chinese book after even a year or two of dedicated study (after studying French for six months for instance you might attempt to slog through Proust); & (6) tones just being hell for the uninitiated.

Yup
Also. 7) absolutely of no use or merit outside or China.
没错。还有(7),在国外或中国以外完全没有用。

This is the real reason the only reason. At least French is the official language of places outside of France.
这才是唯一且真正的原因。至少除法国以外法语也是有些地方的官方语言。

I don't understand this reason. China has the size of a continent and the population of several continents. Would Chinese be more useful if China was broken up into several dozen countries? Since there will technically be more countries that speak Chinese.
我不理解这个原因。中国拥有那么大的大陆面积,几个大洲的人口数量。如果被分成几十个国家,中文难道不是更有用吗?这样从技术上讲,就会有更多的国家讲中文。

so a laowai can't learn Chinese well if he do not love someone or something in China.
所以一个老外如果没有爱上中国的某个人或者某样东西,他是学不好中文的。
marmakoide
That's true for any language really. If you don't put your hear into it it's not going to work.
这种情形对任何语言来说都是一样的。如果你不把你听到的消化进去就没有用。

Very few "love" being here many have a local wife but we generally use a western language at home.
在这里很少有“爱”,很多外国人有着一个中国妻子,但我们在家通常使用西方语言。

At least in HK anything important that needs doing can be done in English and anybody worth talking to can speak English. I don't care if that makes me sound like an asshole. Doing a cost/benefit analysis of learning Chinese I realise its not worth it. The time effort money spent would make a negligible difference to my overall quality of life. Also I don't plan to stay here forever.
至少在香港,任何需要做的重要事情都可以用英语来做,任何值得一谈的人都会说英语。我不在乎这会不会让我听起来像个混蛋。在做学习汉语的成本/效益分析时,我意识到它(学习汉语)并不值得。花费的时间、金钱和努力对我的生活质量来说几乎没有什么影响。而且我也不打算永远呆在这里。

1) Extremely steep learning curve. In most Western languages it takes a day to be able to read everything you see around - read not understand. Chinese has 9000 characters and you need at the very least 1/5 of those to navigate.
2) Tones make pronunciation and understanding way harder.
On the plus side the grammar is elementary.
I think in general in Chinese there is way less of a room for error. If in Italian a learner mispronounces a word or writes it with a letter off I'll be able to understand what he is writing most of the time. In Chinese this is rarely the case.
There is also the habit of Chinese people to repeat the same thing not more slowly but at a way higher volume if you do not understand it the first time that does not help.
Vaeal
TBF Americans tend to do the same thing. You didnt understand me? Ill speak louder then.
坦白来说,坦白来说美国人往往也在做着同样的事。你没有听明白?那我就说的更大声吧。

That was not my experience when I lived in the US and I was learning English but to each their own.
这不是我在美国生活时的经历。那时我正在学英语,但是每个人都有每个人的想法,毕竟萝卜青菜各有所爱嘛。。

Brits are infamous for this too (and I should kniw I am one)
英国人在这点上也是臭名昭着。(我应该很熟悉这点,因为我是个英国人)

That's fine. You should see Italian grammar!
On the other hand if you write "Me likes wine" instead of "I like wine" I will get what you are saying.
那倒不是问题。你应该瞧瞧意大利语语法!
另一方面,如果你写的是“我(主语宾格)喜欢酒”而不是“我(主语主格)喜欢酒”,我能明白你想说要什么。

I actually have been trying to learn Chinese since I arrived. I'd say I'm at an intermediate/low intermediate level but have been at around this level for a year or two now. My speaking/listening sucks though. Honestly I just can't be bothered speaking to most people here anymore. It's almost always the exact same conversations with the exact same questions every time. Most of my interactions in Chinese nowadays involve ordering food buying fruit and... that's about it. There are only so many times I can tell people that yes I can use chopsticks and yes it is possible to buy rice in the UK and feign interest in the conversation.
I don't think Chinese is necessarily that hard though. The grammar easy I might sound like a foreigner but I'm fine with tones and pronunciation reading is tough but alright because I can just drill flashcards whenever I'm not doing anything and lots of words even more advanced words are actually pretty easy to learn/remember once you have a solid base of characters memorised.

Chinese word's pronunciation is kind of different from English or any other western language. Therefore to get perfect pronunciation is difficult but to get Chinese to understand you is not. After all a lot of the southern Chinese does not speak perfect Mandarin but a mixture of dialect and mandarin. Reading basically involves memorizing couple thousand words and understanding the combination of them. I personally think visiting website forums help since there are a lot of unconventional ways of using Chinese there. Writing is a lost cause and I suggest all of you to give up in this direction.

Chinese is one of the most complicated languages around the world. Definitely more than English. There's a ranking on language complexity.
中文是世界上最复杂的语言之一。肯定比英语更复杂。有一个关于语言复杂程度的排名。

Chinese is an easy language to learn to speak (writing/reading isn’t hard but takes serious dedication). Finding Chinese people who will tolerate a foreigner speaking Chinese is not easy. I would try to speak Chinese and even my Chinese girlfriend was getting pissed off at how Chinese responded to me.
中文是门好学好说的语言(写/读的话也不难但是需要不懈的执着)。发现找一个能容忍外国人说中文的中国人真不容易啊。我会试着说中文,连我的中国女朋友都会因中国人对我的糟糕回应而火冒三丈。
