Most of the time, it's not a choice. Literally, funds will be deducted for not doing these dog and pony shows. Say all you will about it not being in the contract, that contract will be renegotiated right before your performance and there isn't any one to report this shit to that actually will do anything about it. I have seen it first hand...

Now you know what it is like to teach in China. Except crank up the other bullshit that is magically added to your contract by 5000% and drown your sorrows nightly in baijiu because you had the silly idea that teaching in a foreign country would get you students that actually wish to learn in greater volume.
When all is said and done, it is a rather enlightening experience. Travel always is, and working in a foreign country even shows you more. The Chinese are pretty nice but your definitely a sideshow event for most with the others being heinously jealous that you doing 5% effort and being drunk daily makes your more than their income. I definitely miss a lot but not one bit working under Chinese "organization" which is to say a "controlled accident" without any real control. Did I mention they will tell you about this performance only a few days before you are forced to attend and rehearsals will cut into your after hours activities which would probably be grading anyways which you just won't do now because 5% (check -- that looks like math, 100%, great job Jim).
Some people do actually enjoy it and smile but most of those people either are psychopaths or are within their first year in a job most people won't do for longer then a year. Oh dare I mention Chinese girlfriends parents will think you are drunk because you laugh too much -- fuck me right, it's funny that I am the only white person in a city of oh 5 million... and all her family, even the random people at the table next to you want to ganbei with a shot glass of beer (which I am not a big drinker and am a rather small guy but I can pretty much do this all night long with the worst being I get a little bubbly).

现在你们知道在中国教书是一种怎样的体会了吧。你以为在外国教书就可以获得很多爱好学习的好学生，实际上这是个愚蠢的想法，合同也没有你想象的那么好，夜里你只能就着白酒吞咽下自己的悲伤。
但归根结底，这是一段相当振聋发聩的经历。旅行是如此，而生活在外国更是如此。中国人是相当友好的，对于他们中的大部分人来说，你绝对是一个新奇的事物，而其他的一些人则会非常嫉妒你只要付出5%的努力每天喝得醉醺醺赚得比他们还多。我确实很想念中国，但不想念在中国的“机构”里工作，因为当他们说事情可控时却完全不可控。他们会在表演的几天前才通知你，然后你被迫参加，下班后也要被叫去排练。
某些外国人确实很喜欢这么做，很开心，但是他们不是精神病患者就是在相关岗位上就职不到一年的新人（而这种岗位大部分人不会从事超过1年时间）。哦，还有我那中国女友的父母，就因为你经常大笑，他们认为你喝醉了。搞笑的是在一个500万人口的城市里，我竟然是唯一的白人。她的所有家人，甚至是旁桌的陌生人都想和你喝啤酒干杯。

Probably because it is a negative thing. First of all, on the Chinese side you are mistaken. It is rarely patriotism and instead it is usually nationalism. And on the foreign side this is state sponsored propoganda which is co-opting gullible foreigners. Its both sad and shameful that these foreigners are so niave that they freely took part in this without considering the implications.
Its easy for people such as yourself to make snarky comments on the internet but for the rest of us adults who have watched China's rise over the last 20 years there is much to be uneasy about.
When China starts to own up to abuses against its own people and starts to become a responsible player on the world stage, rather than subverting rule of law, human rights and democracy, is when I will sign up to be in these videos myself.
Until then I will keep my eyes wide open.
