In some ways, in some areas, Chinese cities are“more developed.” Of course, this raises the question of what “more developed”means. More developed for what? That’s why I say in some areas in some ways.

Chinese cities have had a major growth period inthe last 20 years. So some of the most visible parts of cities — parts that getphotographed a lot — look newer and are newer. That’s the giant skyscrapers. There are just more new large buildings in the most densely packed parts ofChinese cities than there are in the US (or frankly, anywhere).

That’s simply a matter of when these cities hadtheir big growth period. The same was true when Europeans were looking at UScities in the middle of the 20th century — they looked like “the future”because they had grown more recently.

The human and economic geography of Chinese citiesis very different from most US cities, so some aspects of Chinese cities are“more developed” — mass transit being the most obvious.

Most travel most of the time for most Chinesepeople is not by privately-owned automobile, it’s via mass transit. A higherproportion of US citizens own their own automobiles and this has been true fordecades.

US cities developed around this reality. So, ifyou’re experiencing a Chinese city as a tourist on foot, you’re definitelygoing to see a “more developed” mass transit system than in any US city. Andthat system will necessarily be newer than any system in the US, it’s just afunction of when the urban centers in the two societies developed.

But do bear in mind that there are many, many urbanareas in China that are not very much like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen — themost economically developed cities in China. Even the most developed parts ofsecond- and third-tier cities in China don’t compare, and when you get down tofourth-tier cities and beyond, it’s NOTHING like what you’ve seen. Andthere are definitely large parts of even the first-tier cities that definitelydon’t look like “the city of tomorrow.” As a brief visitor, you are unlikely tosee much more than a glimpse of those parts of China’s top cities, at most.

I've also been in both American and Chinesebig cities and I agree with you Chinese cities look more modern cleaner andbetter organized.
America as we see today is an old country. NewYork still has the oldest and shittiest subway system ever! Changes take timeand most citizens don't see them as problems because they've grew up in that.

Modern China however is only 30–40 years oldits development is amazing in such a short time! China wanted to develop sothey did everything according to their need of improving their life. Everysystem is new maybe even the first in the world because they still focus ondevelopment. China can build a whole new city faster than we can construct anew subway station in Hungary…

The other reason is that Chinese people havesimilar values in life they value hard work peace and they don't care what theothers believe in. They don't have such religious social and criminal issueslike American cities have. Man you can't pay me enough to enter Detroit while Ican walk midnight in any Chinese park alone without thinking of any danger.Since Chinese cities don't have these issues their local governments can focuson other things that are important for people like cleanness modern subways orhigh speed trains which have better services than most world-class airlinecompanies.

I have been to Beijing Xi’an and Shanghai. Igrew up in the greater New York City metro area.

I used to think NYC was the human center ofthe world and the ultimate city. When I went to Shanghai and Beijing I realizedthat the Chinese cities look like they’re a century in the future and dwarfthose in the US.

The Freedom Tower in New York City (I will notcall it the World Trade Center because I respect those who died on 9/11/01)would be lost if put in the Shanghai skyline. It’s as high as the third highestbuilding in the photo (and yes China is working on it’s pollution problems justas the US president is bringing it back to the US)

Have any of you noticed that most of thebuildings in US Cities all look alike?

As for the exaggeration of so called “ghostcities” those are simply large empty developments at the edge of hugelypopulated cities in China. You can see ghost neighborhoods in Newark andDetroit where the race riots of the 60s took place.

Chinese cities are much cleaner than mostcities in the US. I saw human shits (stools) in downtowns of LA and Long BeachI saw rats in dirty/smelly subway in NYC. It's shameful that those cities can'tdo anything about it . A country can sent human to space but can't do anythingabout human shits on the streets and homeless people ?

Beijing and Shanghai look more developedbecause China keep on building infrastructures to boost GDP. On the outside itlooks amazing. But I wouldn't call them more developed than western developedcountry. Because obviously they only care about what eyes could see and don’tcare about what goes underground: all big cities in China has terrible sewagesystem. Those cities would flood when it rain too much.

Many Chinese cities or parts of them are muchnewer than US cities New Chinese developments can use modern design ideas andmodern materials and technology. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that you seemore shiny steel and glass high-rises fully wired up for broadband with waterand energy saving features in China than in cities largely built 50–100 yearsago in the USA.

Because American cities designed for cars andnot pedestrians. That’s why you rarely see dense urban areas in the USA even LAis expanding horizontally rather than vertically. I am not going to get intowhy this has happened but this is the basic reason why we don’t have many greaturban spaces in the USA and urban designing and planning are not booming in theUSA like other countries. The whole interaction and experience is differentwhen you don’t walk in your town. This is also the reason why many Americansdon’t have that crazy sense of belonging to their towns as many foreignershave. This also causes many social problems in the USA as we don’t interactwith people in our town and don’t have the needed cultural exchange. Webasically only interact with people of our own class who are like-minded. Wedon’t get to meet new people in shared urban spaces or even on a bus. I wentoff the rails here ! Anyway America will never have such a developed citiesbecause we prefer to live in large houses rather than densely populated areasetc.

Several things in Shanghai are more developed thanwhat’s here in the States:
·        public transportation especially the high speedtrain system
·        the ability to pay for anything, anywhere with yourphone
·        the efficiency with which city streets are keptclean
·        delivery services whereby you can buy anythingonline and it will be delivered to your office or residence within a few hours
·        the efficiency with which new high riseconstruction occurs
·        the lack of crime

U.S. cities are based on income. The rich citieshave more taxes and therefore can spend more on upkeep and expansion. The poorcities dont. Look at San Francisco, a beautiful city with lots of rich peopleand lots of taxes.

Now check outDetroit.

The problem with acapitalist society is the rich get richer and the poor stay poor.

Yes, the US economic boom was from 1920to 1970 and many building and cities were constructed at that time. Thebooming period in China is from 1980 up to now. Certainly, US cities lookolder and Chinese cities are more modern.

In addition, inUS, most of rich/mid income people live in the suburb of large cities whilemany cities have poor inner city areas. This is probably not common in China.

I’ll keep this simple. Thiscountry has grown so fast in the past 10 years, and it’s getting better andbetter. In general the big cities in mainland China are NOT cleaner.. howeversome areas are cleaner than others.. With that said, they do have much betterpublic transportation than the US, and many cities are becoming more and moreinternational.

The malls and buildings aremore modern, bigger, brighter, bolder and interesting to explore. The economyis much more stable than back home in the US. With APP’s like WeChat, Taobao, and Meituan this country is extremely convenient. The housing however is aninteresting subject. Everyone lives in giant apartment areas that they call“gardens”. You can find nice ones with a Gym and a Pool but it’s going to costyou serious money.

The good news is that Rentis relatively cheap in this country. I mean super cheap, (I live in Chongqingand have a pretty upscale pad next to a fancy mall and pay around $350 a month)I prefer living in a house though and it’s much harder to find that in a bigcity in China. As great as some of this sounds, there are some con’s. Forexample, this is a country of high population, it can get a littleroverwhelming at times when both walking and driving.

During heavy times doingthings as simple as taking an elevator or riding a bus can prove to be veryinconvenient. It’s not that clean. There are cleaner cities and areas but ingeneral it’s a good rule of thumb to bring Hand Sanitizer and Toilet paper withyou everywhere you go. In most cities It’s not uncommon to see lots of straydogs and cats. Because of the high population there can also be some wealthdisparity.

It’s not uncommon at all tosee some nice new buildings next to old dumpy buildings or building that werenever completed. This again depends on where you live. It’s an amazing countryrich in culture, and has definitely surpassed the US in many ways. You shoulddefinitely take a visit! I love it here.

If we go by economic development Chinastill has the GDP per capita of a developing nation, although that is partlydue to a poor rural population the average US city dweller will be better offthan the average PRC one.

If we go by modernity. Well then ofcourse China wins that. Most of their urban development happened in the lasttwo decades. Most US cities are full of old buildings and are so built up it'shard to seriously renovate them.

Personally Iplace a greater importance on the economic factor but its subjective.

Big Chinese cities areoften more developed than American ones as they are mostly new with moderninfrastructure and systems. The reason for this is that, as the state controlseverything and is flush with cash, they have heavily invested in a moderninfrastructure while preserving some ancient monumental aspects as park land.

I do not think they are more developedin the sense of US cities are lack of sufficient service.

Straight speaking, of course, Chinesecities are newly built compare to here in the US.

Is there a need for US city to do acatch up? I do not think so, at least not in the large scale.
