Westerners are addicted.
They are addicted to shopping and compulsive buying. Their houses are crammed with stuff they buy because the social culture is to go the “mall” several times a week to buy stuff you don’t really need ……. from food that makes you fat and combined with the lack of exercise leads to a lifetime of health problems. Heart illnesses diabetes and size XXXL clothes. We know how attractive size XXXL clothes looks like.

Citizens within western countries generally believe their country is going in the wrong direction and their biggest fears are around security crime and violence.
To provide a lifestyle like westerners China would need to less secure with increased crime and violence. Hopefully it will not come to the point they need guns to protect themselves from neighbours and the police.
Regular Chinese police are unarmed and when arguments between citizens and the police happen citizens are not assaulted or jailed. I guess that might have to change in future.
Would they also need to be in the malls several times a week rather then in the parks daily doing exercises and dancing.
Most Chinese are debt free but one assumes they will need to acquire debt to buy all that stuff to keep up with the western Jones’ and produce all that garbage per person.
To follow the West will it have to consume much more energy and pollute more per person?
For a number of years roughly 500000 Chinese as foreign students live in the western countries and most return to China but some stay. So some Chinese move onto the western lifestyle faster then others.
In summary I can only assume it will take several decades to come close but I wish it won’t happen. I am hoping for world a better outcome is possible.

It would be a big challenge.
As we know living conditions are based on energy consuming. The number of energy consumption per person could reflect the living standard people are having.
According to the calculation if China could attain the living standard of western Europe’s or USA’s then the oil needed is more than the total oil production of the world. The energy needed would be huge. So in today’s world it would be quite impossible.

Yes but not entirely because the chinese living condition goes up to catch up.
It will also be because the living standards of many mediocre people in western nations will have to come down which will be alarming to those used to first world privileges. There is no reason an ordinary coder or some sort of consultant or paper pusher will have to make so much more in San Francisco or Seattle than in Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Some form of arbitrage will continue and that will bring the generous welfare systems of Europe and America under ever mounting pressure until they are dismantled. To be noted given how much of America’s debt is held by China a lot of this welfare is already being subsidised by China itself.
In summary inequality inside the countries will continue to increase with the smarter ambitious entreprenurial minded people pulling away and getting richer. Look at the growth of newly minted Chinese multi-millionaires.
Inequality among the countries will come down.
In China you already have massive inequality and very little socialist welfare compared to the US. Then in turn the US more unequal than Europe. So in this regard surprisingly China shows us the future.

how to build more affordable housing to cater for the gradual urbanization of the whole country. The process of urbanization can't be reversed and set to continue. But the cost of housing in China is beyond what the average citizens could afford and this create social problem that will not be good for the stability of China. The government and government lixed companies do provide housing for its employees and factories provide hostels for its workers but this is not the most efficient way of solving the housing problem.

The “great convergence” is inevitable and the first mover advantage which the western countries had enjoyed for more than 200 years will be ended finally. How long will it take? In best scenario it would happen within 20–30 years while in the worst scenario within this century for sure.

From my point of view the life quality in China suffer from things that simply cannot be solved. Some can be sloved with time. But i don’t think in my lifetime there will be a moment where i would say “yes quality of life in China is better than in my home country”.

However is also up to what you want and what Chinese people want may be different from what the people in the western countries you mentioned want. Quality of life is also subjective we don’t value the same things in the same way.

Frankly when i read some western that moved to China and say life is better i wonder if he really lives in China or just in the few km of big city like Shanghai. And even than i still think he must be blind. If you are rich for sure is easier to have many things women and respect than in western countries.

People get a bit confused about this. I left the UK to live in CZ because the quality of life is better . The UK is the most appalling place to live largely because we never really got rid of Feudalism the land you need to build on is prohibitively expensive. Having a broken political system does not help much either. I see similar parallel's in the US. The US is not going to be Great again and the UK is going to be a complete train crash. Yes China has problems but it has also made more progress than any country of Earth in the last two decades.
