Is China safe for tourists?

I visit China a fair amount for both work and to visit family.
The biggest physical threats in China are crossing the street and breathing the air, which affect tourists and natives alike.
The biggest differential threat to tourists is getting overcharged for stuff and getting approached by street merchants: a threat to the pocketbook, but not to your person.

Two years ago I ran into a girl from Switzerland in Gansu province China, in which I was working for a gas pipeline project.  This girl was holding a piece of paper looking for help with a broken touring bike on the high way. So I pulled over asked her what happened, it comes out that she and her friend, two grils, cycled along together in china on the high way, till that day , they have finished 1/3 of their journey which is about 1000miles . But cause the loud wind that day, her partner even didn't realized she has fell behind and didn't notice the phonecall from her at all, and all the mantenace tools was on her friend's bike. So I drove her and her bike to her friend, helped them fixed the bike and gave them some water supply, till they were back on the tour again.
I tell the story to show that in China, many many people are happy to offer help to strangers. These two girls even wouldn't finish their journey by cycling if China was not safe for tourists. China is a beautiful and safe country for touring by walking, cycling, driving.
I recommend you to read a book The Longest Way written by Christoph Rehage who is from Germany, walked through China from Beijing to Urumchi in 12 months. The book is full of pictures and stories about his 4646Km journey from east China to west China. I believe you would find some answers to your question.

China is one of the safest places I have been in the world and I enjoy traveling there for that reason. I have not feared once going anywhere in China including the rural areas, crowded transport, or the major cities. I have always been treated well, sometimes embarrassingly so and as some have pointed out foreigners are safer than locals.

In short I love China and would love to live there. I go as often as I can.

Totally. Australia is far more dangerous. In China, if anyone tries to harm you a big crowd will gather. There are security cameras everywhere. People generally have high moral standards. That being said petty crime is around and the main reason is poverty. People will steal your stuff in a remote area if you fall asleep on the bus etc. If you go to Beijing, don’t get scammed by people at the wall or whatever. They will try to take you to a really expensive tea house ( you only find out when you get the bill ).
Avoid dodgy KTV. Just don’t do dumb things.
Muggings, rapes, murders, gun crime, gangs, and stuff that can happen randomly in the US, or other places like Australia are much, much less.
Australia has a huge recreational drug problem, especially with ice. Don’t have to deal with that here.
China executes more criminals than any other country by far. You don’t want to mess with the law here.

ABSOLUTELY YES.
To be honest, many Chinese people are afraid of traveling in America because some news that reported happened there. How Chinese people think of America is same as how American think of China. The news you have heard may be true but it’s the small part of this country. Just like chinese can’t agree with the law in some states that you can get your own guns in your bedside tables. What’s worse, the medium let Chinese know some drugs in America are legal…
HOWEVER, we both know this two countries are safe enough to travel.

Foreigners can be targeted for passports, laptops, mobile phones, purses and handbags. Major tourist sites and areas frequented by foreigners attract thieves and pickpockets. Take extra care at major tourist sites, street markets, Beijing International Airport, major international events and conferences and popular bar areas after dark. If your passport is lost or stolen, report it to the nearest police station or Public Security Bureau, who will issue a ‘confirmation of loss’ report. Don’t resist any attempted robbery.
Serious crime against foreigners is relatively rare, but incidents do occur. There have been incidents of sexual assault and robbery of foreigners, particularly when travelling alone in a taxi late at night in major cities. Where possible, take an ‘official’ taxi, make sure someone knows where you are and try to take a note of the taxi’s number.
There are occasional incidents with taxi and pedicab drivers who insist the passenger misunderstood the fare. Avoid travelling in unmarked or unmetered ‘taxis’ and insist on paying only the meter fare. Ask the driver for a receipt (fapiao), on which the taxi number should be printed. You can take this to the police to lodge a complaint.
Counterfeit bank notes (especially RMB100) are increasingly common. They are generally crumpled to avoid detection. Unscrupulous traders may try to switch your genuine bank notes for counterfeits. Check carefully before accepting notes. It is quite normal to do so.
Beware of scams particularly in popular tourist areas. A regular example is the ‘tea tasting’ scam. Scams usually involve a foreign national being invited to visit a bar, shop or cafe – for example to practice English or meet a girl - but results in demands for an exorbitant fee, often payable by credit card. This can result in threats of violence or credit card fraud.
Don’t trek alone in isolated areas, including those that follow parts of the Great Wall. If you do, leave your itinerary, mobile number and expected time of return at your hotel or with a third party.
Areas bordering on Siberia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Laos and Burma are poorly policed. In Yunnan Province, drug smuggling and other crimes are increasing. There is a risk of attack from armed bandits in remote areas.

China isn't the South Korea and is definitely a place you must visit once in your life. Straight answer is like any other countries of course it depends on the area, what time is it, and what you are doing there. The food are delicious, the scenic views and diversity incredible.
Ive travelled a few times to China and never encountered anything that's dangerous. What you should watch out for is probably pickpockets around the semi rural area or in the public transport, but other than that nothing malicious really. Just stay within tourist area and you should be fine.
That being said like with any countries, researching the customs and cultures here will get you a long way to getting along with people. Most dont speak english so make sure you learn some basic words like toilet.

Before sharing my AIESEC experience(Global Volunteer) in china I should say my view on china. Before going to china I don’t know much about it, What I know is
1.It’s communist [1]country so no freedom of speech and government suppress[2]their citizens if they don’t obey party rules.
2.china is famous for fake and cheap goods.
3.Chinese are very poor so they make cheap goods and survive
4.They don’t speak English at all so it is going to be very tough for me to survive there(china).
5.I thought food habits might be different.I read news regularly so I know that Chinese eat dog’s and cats ruthlessly.
6.China is good for Martial Arts which has been thought by Indians(Bhodhidharma).
7.The Chinese Actor I know was one and only Jackie Chan[3].
These are the things which I know before going china and I should tell you guy’s one thing I am afraid of Immigration[4] in china because the time I started flying was very bad because 1 day before my arrival in shanghai, Bomb Blast happen in Shanghai Pudong Airport, So I was afraid of Immigration though my visa is tourist visa.
Now, coming to point The experience in China is Amazing and it broke all my stereotypes.
1.First thing I found was all Chinese are not similar each and everyone is different.
2.it seems china is not a poor country.
3.The Chinese don’t hate communism and they love what CPC( communist party of china) does.
4.China is super cool at copying all top western brands.
5.I thought people will be fighting on road with swords and they would hate Indians but ”Chinese are so welcoming” I got nice caring throughout my stay.
6.Chinese are very hard working, they never fail to inspire me. Jack Ma( Chinese Billionaire) says ” If we want to beat western companies we have to work 16 hours a day” and his employees work 16 hours.
7.Sarcastically beer is cheaper then water and it sold in super markets unlike licence shops in India.
8. Finding vegetarian food is very difficult and it’s very expensive actually double of non veg
9. Mostly what you get is Beef, pork etc… Non-vegans china is for you, you like china the Most.
10. In china the CPC will crackdown good roads and construct road again just to provide employment.
11. At the end of my trip to china made me to understand the difference between Democracy and Communist, according to me “Democracy is like mother, Democracy treats their citizens as a child care for them through welfare programs where as communism is like father which makes his child to learn harder way”.
This is why Chinese like Dangal so much, In dangal Aamir Khan make his daughters in harder way for their better life.
Initially I didn’t like china but end of my trip I don’t want to come back to India because the shanghai( city of night life) city is so beautiful and people are so good to me.

Absolutely.
Look, I'm Japanese, and Japanese media often shows angry Chinese anti-Japan protesters burning Japanese flags or attacking Japanese restaurants. As a result, some Japanese people are worried about going to China, but that's ridiculous. The protesters are a infinitesimally small percentage of people, considering the whole Chinese population.
The image of China we often see in the media is heavily distorted.
As somebody who's been to 30 countries, I can say that China is not even remotely dangerous. I enjoyed my time there. You just have to watch out for scammers in big, touristy cities, but they are easy to avoid.
Go and visit China; it will be an interesting experience.

100% SAFE. I went to China for three times and every time I enjoyed it a lot!
China has some absolutely amazing sights and scenery (spend as much time in Sichuan province as you can!) The only difficulty you may encounter is the language. I can speak mandarin so this was not a huge problem for me, but all the ticket counters, most hotels and transport options will not speak English. It my be a challenge to travel solo in China without at least a basic competency of Mandarin. But in terms of safety, you will have no problem, if that is what you are most worried about.

I am a solo female hitchhiker and I travel the world for two years now. I’ve travelled all the way from Ukraine over Russia and Kazakhstan to China, Laos and Vietnam and one year ago I came back to China to continue exploring this wonderful country.
Although Chinese people usually freak out when I tell them I am hitchhiking alone, and tell me that it is very dangerous, I’ve seriously never met bad people here. Everyone is so incredibly friendly that it’s almost impossible to believe, especially after travelling in post-Soviet countries like Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
I’ve been camping all around China and Tibetan territories of Kham and Amdo, hitchhiking in the most remote places you can ever imagine, I stayed in the houses of people I’ve just met and i never ever was treated badly. They would tell you that Tibetans are bad, Amdo people would tell you that Kham people are dangerous, Kham people would scare you with thiefs but believe me, your experience will prove that all of them are wrong and all of them are really really good people.
The only thing you should be careful about is the traffic and roads because it seems that the traffic rules just don’t exist for the Chinese people. And, probably, while travelling in remote mountainous areas, beware of the wild animals. That’s probably it :)

Absolutely. I'm an American and I lived in Shanghai in 2009 but traveled throughout China. During my time there, I encountered many people who were friendly and willing to help, especially if you're open to helping locals practice a little English, which is a very valuable skill that most Chinese people I met aimed to cultivate.
While there is the occasional person who may try to take advantage of foreigners, but this is actually much less significant than a similar sentiment which I've encountered in Paris and Rome. For the most part, people are kind and fair.
My opinion is that traditional danger is not a real concern for tourists traveling in China. As others note, the average Chinese person does not have access to guns, reducing risk of massive scale murders, but also, I heard of many strict punishments given under the PRC's reign that act as severe deterrents to crimes that might impact any tourists.
I have found from people who hesitate to visit that the biggest fear comes from lack of language skills. China is not like Europe, in that sometimes it's hard to find someone who speaks English. I would strongly encourage travelers to carry a notebook, as sometimes people have better abilities with written words as pronunciations vary widely. Also people were always willing to write down Chinese characters, which you can show time and time again to help you communicate. And of course, when all else fails, a notebook speeds up a game of pictionary.
I've traveled all over the world and China is still one of the most diverse, expansive and beautiful countries I've been to. I strongly advise tourists to not worry about danger -- as it is a very safe place, but instead plan for the wonders ahead and be prepared for the occasional miscommunication and spontaneous detour.

I have visited China once on Dec 2014 to a place called Ningbo, nearly 3 hours drive from Shanghai. I was amazed by the hospitality of the people in general. Where ever I went, I was greeted with a smile and people were courteous enough to help me out  even if I was a complete stranger to the city and had serious language barriers.
I would narrate two incidents:
Incident 1 : Ningbo: New Year Night: I was dead drunk to say the least in a place called La-Waitan, the Bund of Ningbo. It was already 3.30 AM in the morning and most of the people had left after the party. I thought that I will trust my "Drunken Instincts" to find a way back to my hotel which was nearly 3 kms away. Incidentally so, I lost my way and found myself in a place which was absolutely unknown. I was sitting there in the bus stop and waiting for someone to help me out or else thought to spend the night somehow. Suddenly a convertible Ferrari zoomed past me only to find that it reversed to ask me "Happy New Year". I realized a pretty girl and her boy friend had come for my rescue at almost 4.30 AM in the morning. I asked them if they can drop me to my hotel. And they obliged.
Incident 2: Shanghai: I was supposed to take the Subway and get myself to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. To be honest, I was standing in front of the ticket vending machine and literally clueless. Suddenly a young guy (who I later realized was studying engineering), and came down to help me. Moreover, he drew a map and told me things and places I should avoid in Shanghai especially during the night.
I had roamed in Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo and Nanzing, without any major problems finding the cops and locals really helpful. Yes, the air quality is sometimes bad and people smoking around, it may get tough sometimes in pubs and public places, but I have never seen more picturesque as the rural China.
Indeed it is a safe place. In case you are clueless about something because of the language barrier, just say "Ni-Hao" and "Shei-Shei" at the end. Almost 90% of the work gets done in sign language :P

I've been to ~25 countries in the world, and China is easily among the safest of them all. I feel safer in China than i do in most major cities in the United States. I would put China up there with Denmark, as far as tourist safety.
I spent 4 months in China during the summer of 2010, and never once faced a single problem. Examples of things that have happened there that would rarely happen anywhere else:
In Yinchuan, Ningxia - Lost my credit card, passport and wallet and needed to book a night at a JJ Inn. Staff member TOOK me to her house and let me use her computer to contact my brother, who then booked me a few nights online.
In Pingliang, Gansu - Arrived on a train at 5 AM, before anything opened. Slept on the train station floor, entrusting my bag + passport with a migrant laborer when I was feeling sick and had to go to the bathroom. You wouldn't be able to do this in any other country that I've ever been to.
In Beijing - Went to a coffee shop for the first time and forgot my wallet. Waitress trusted me to bring money "next time".
In Beijing - Internet cafe wouldn't let me use a computer without me giving them my passport (so that the govt can hunt me down if I violate freedom of speech restrictions), and a couple overheard my frustration. They brought me to their house to use the internet and we had tea and they later became good friends of mine that summer!
...And countless other stories of good, trusting and trustworthy people. Needless to say, I've been 3 times and I'm heading back this October. Amazing country in many ways.

I just returned from China yesterday, and I can reply with confidence that China is extremely safe, more so than in my U.S. home in the San Francisco Bay Area. I traveled to Beijing, Xi'an, Changsha, ZhangJiaJie, and Shanghai. Everywhere I found people courteous and respectful.
